Book Description

September 4, 2012 Liaden Universe Novels (Book 13)
Stirring space adventure from master storytellers Sharon Lee and Steve Miller – #5 in the award-winning Liaden Universe® saga. Space ships, action, adventure – all tied together with a strong dollop of romance and intrigue – make this a compelling series for a wide range of readers, from romance to military SF lovers.

First Class courier pilot Theo Waitley was already known as a nexus of violence – and then she inherited the precarious captaincy of a mysterious self-aware ship designed to serve a long dead trader. Now she has a trade route to run for Clan Korval while she convinces the near mythic ghost ship Bechimo – and herself – that she wants to commit herself as the human side to their immensely powerful symbiosis. While her former lover battles a nano-virus that's eating him alive, she's challenged to rescue hundreds of stranded pilots and crewmen from an explosive situation in near orbit around a suddenly hostile planet. Lovers, enemies, an ex-roomie, and a jealous spaceship are all in peril as Theo wields power that no one in the universe is sure of, especially her.

About the Author

Maine-based writers Sharon Lee and Steve Miller teamed up in the late '80s to bring the world the story of Kinzel, a inept wizard with a love of cats, a thirst for justice, and a staff of true power. Since then, the husband-and-wife have written dozens of short stories, and eighteen novels, most set in their star-spanning Liaden Universe®.  Before settling down to the serene and stable life of a science fiction and fantasy writer, Steve was a traveling poet, a rock-band reviewer, reporter, and editor of a string of community newspapers. Sharon, less adventurous, has been an advertising copywriter, copy editor on night-side news at a small city newspaper, reporter, photographer, and book reviewer. Both credit their newspaper experiences with teaching them the finer points of collaboration. Sharon and Steve passionately believe that reading fiction ought to be fun, and that stories are entertainment. Steve and Sharon maintain a web presence at www.korval.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great September 15, 2012
Format:Hardcover
These two authors have the capability of creating great books together when they combine their strengths. This book did not get the balance correct, which the technical writing outweighing the human side of the partnership.
The early stages of this book were very choppy and mechanical; and could have used the infusion of the humor so prevalent in other books in the series. At one stop in the travel monologue, the most exciting thing that happened was the find of some fresh baked cookies. While always important in a stop in space, it made for a lackluster chapter.
Acknowledged is the fact that some Sci-Fi fans enjoy a lot of techno babble mixed into the writing. The second half of this book will please them greatly, especially during the battle scenes. For others, it is time to strap on the hip boots and start wading through all the pseudo-scientific terms while living through all the many battles.
Missing in the book is the connection to the characters, even with the development of the AI and Theo's relationship. There was no breath of life into the characters, even at their joining. Win Tom finally wakes up, a possible pivotal moment in the series, but it evoked a lack of hardly any emotional involvement from the readers.
Finally, the end of the last book (Ghost Ship) left several cliff hangers. This book barely addressed them and added several more. The epilogue is what saved this book from being a totally frustrating middle book in a series with the next not due until next year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dragon Ship September 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Dragon Ship" was a bit of a let down after the other Liaden books. It hopped, skipped, and jumped about from one theme or character to another so much that you become side-tracked with the individual stories about the "Uncle" or "Daav" instead of focusing on the main characters in this book, Theo and the ship. First time a Liaden novel felt disjointed! If I had not read all the previous Liaden novels I wouldn't have had a clue what was going on in all the side scenarios.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh September 10, 2012

This book was a real disappointment. A friend of mine described it as a "transitional" book, one that sets up the next in the series. I thought that it just went on and on.

Unless the events of the previous book are completely straight in your mind, this one will seem muddled. There are way too many story lines that shift too frequently. You never get a chance to really engage with the story because you're rushed off to another place just as you're figuring out where you are.

"Dragon Ship" may have not been the strongest book in the Liadian series, but it did leave me anxious to read the next one, where hopefully a lot of the threads will come together.

I bought this because it is the follow up to Ghost ship. I thought it got a little bogged down with details, thoughts of the captain.
