Book Description

A man without a past.
A woman without a future.
A world destroyed by monsters.
All that's left is hope.

In Rain Mauri's post-apocalyptic world there are no shades of gray when it comes to survival. Until she meets a Dragon Warrior and discovers nothing is as simple as it seems.

Together, Rain and the Dragon Warrior must uncover the truth behind the nightmare their world has become. Their quest will put them in the crosshairs of a ruthless enemy, but with her determination and his skill, they might just save their race from destruction. If they can save each other first.

About the Author

Shéa MacLeod is the author of urban fantasy post-apocalyptic scifi paranormal romances with a twist of steampunk. She has dreamed of writing novels since before she could hold a crayon. She totally blames her mother. After living in Portland, Oregon, USA most of her life, she now makes her home in an Edwardian town house in London, England just a stone's throw from the local cemetery. Which explains a lot. Fortunately, the neighbors are quiet. The first three novels (KISSED BY DARKNESS, KISSED BY FIRE, and KISSED BY SMOKE)of her fast paced urban fantasy series the SUNWALKER SAGA are available now on Amazon. The first two novels (DRAGON WARRIOR and DRAGON LORD) of her new post-apocalyptic series DRAGON WARS are also available.

2.0 out of 5 stars meh December 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book for my kindle. I was encouraged by the great reviews and was expecting to discover a new favorite author. The word building was not especially thrilling and neither was the plot. The characters were as to be expected- no surprises here. All in all I was very disappointed and wish I had spent my 3 bucks elsewhere.

Update:SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

Since so many people thought this review was unhelpful I guess I need to elaborate. The evil scientist is a stereotype. The dragon warrior is able to deal with regaining the memories of a lifetime of horrific events one day and romance the girl the next. It's crazy unrealistic. The setting is a desert wasteland and not very interesting. The marines are a stereotype of the military macho man who are all evil and enjoy raping and kidnapping and stealing and generally causing misery at every turn. I have a problem when an entire group of people are viewed as evil. There are no shades of grey with any of those characters. Some of the plot doesn't make sense or is not explained well enough. Why the dragons exist is as far fetched an idea as any I have ever heard. How the dragons were actually made is not discussed, just that they were. Plus, the dragon warriors are super rare and yet one is left for dead. The marines scavenge everything off the trucks and don't make sure their best fighter is truly dead? In addition, the evil scientist can reanimate dead bodies, so why not take him back even if he is dead? You get slapped in the face with the foreshadowing and obvious clues throughout the book which is handy if you like knowing exactly how things are going to work out super super early. I don't mean for this review to hurt anyone's feelings, but I felt a more honest review was needed for this particular book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The right economy of scale and scope, plus Dragons. October 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a lot of fun, what with the post-apocalyptic setting, dragons and marines (or rather the sorry remnants of what had been the Corps, they aren't nice guys), plus a bit of mystery and romance. The lead character Rain Mauri is tough, smart, and practical. Competent without being any kind of unreasonable super-heroine, which goes a long way to giving "reality" to her world.

I am confident a lot of reviewers will extol the virtues of MacLeod's clean writing and adept characterization, so I will just focus on one thing that for me made the book particularly enjoyable: It's sense of scale. With a lot of "fantastic" books, maybe even a majority, it seems that the fate of the whole world has to be constantly in the balance, or else the stakes don't seem high enough. That is not the case here. In this first volume of what promises to be a series, things are as simple as protecting the people of Point A from the people of Point B, and the narrative is still plenty engaging. There is room left for the stakes to get bigger and bigger as the series progresses, but that upping of the ante will be "earned," not a constant from the beginning. Honestly, I found it really refreshing, and it also brought a "reality" to a fictional world.

At about 45K words, Dragon Warrior is right on the edge of novella/novel length, and it is a fast and fun read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable characters and story April 4, 2013
By Kat V.
Format:Kindle Edition
The premise of this book has promise, but all of the characters are so unrealistic. Pretty much everybody is either a completely perfect good guy or a completely evil bad guy. Most everybody behaves in ways that make no sense given their circumstances, and there are some major plot holes.

The actual writing is in need of some editing. As a particularly egregious example, "soldiers" is misspelled as "soliders" twice, but that's far from the only typo. Even a spell check should have caught that! The misspellings are frequent and obvious enough to be distracting from the story.

It's too bad, because the story really could have been interesting. If you are really good at suspending your disbelief and don't mind typos, you may like it. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.

Could not put this book down. Kept me guessing through out the book about what would happen next. Enjoyed how the future might workout. Had a good love story and I liked the fight scenes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bought it, but not going to finish it October 30, 2012
By eiie
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love dragon worlds and the promise of hot men, but the writing was jerky and distracting, bopping from one character's head to another within the same scene. I wasn't grounded in the world in the opening chapters, which was off-putting.

I didn't bond right away with any of the characters, but I wanted to give it a chance (I'd bought it, after all) so I read further. This might be a taste thing, but I still didn't connect with any character I met and the writing style was sub-par so I called it quits and didn't finish.

Dragon Warrior has GORGEOUS cover art. Alas, that adage about books and their covers proves to be my undoing.
