Book Description

January 10, 2012 8 and up Dragonbreath (Book 6)800L (What's this?)
Ride 'em, cowboy! Danny's off to summer camp! Danny Dragonbreath is counting down the days to his awesome western summer camp . . . until he gets the terrible news that his annoying younger cousin Spencer is going too. Good-bye, Danny the Cowboy; Hello, Danny the Babysitter. But when Spencer befriends a mythical jackalope (or horned bunny) and then uncovers a diabolical jackalope-napping ring, things start looking up again. After all, if you need a math problem solved, you call a nerd. But if you need a villainous ring of horned-bunnynappers broken up, you call Danny Dragonbreath. The sixth book in this laugh-until-smoke-comes-out-of- your-nose series is perfect for Wimpy Kid fans everywhere.

More About the Author

Ursula Vernon is the author and illustrator of "Nurk," "Digger," "Dragonbreath" and a number of other projects. The daughter of an artist, she spent her youth attempting to rebel and become a scientist, but eventually succumbed to the siren song of paint (although not before getting a degree in anthropology, because life isn't complete without student loans, right?). Her work has been nominated for an Eisner award, "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition" and a number of Webcomics Choice Awards.

Ursula grew up in Oregon and Arizona, went to college at Macalester College in Minnesota, and stayed there for ten years, until she finally learned to drive in deep snow and was obligated to leave the state.

Having moved across the country several times, she eventually settled in Pittsboro, North Carolina, where she works full-time as an artist, writer, and creator of oddities. She lives with her boyfriend, his beagle, a small collection of cats, and a large collection of Indonesian masks, all of which mostly contrive to keep her out of trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very popular series with my youngest son! March 4, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My youngest is a former reluctant reader--now there is nothing reluctant about him and this is one of the pivotal series that helped him decide reading is fun. Nowadays I can find him doing the old flashlight under the covers trick with his Kindle and otherwise trying to sneak the Kindle or a paper book when he's not supposed to be reading (dinner time, shower time, bedtime etc). He just informed me that this series remains on the must-buy list....

As the cover/blurb and other reviews show this book is about 'Danny Dragonbreath' and 'Wendell' who are featured in a series that involves an abundance of simple artwork, good narrative and, in this case, solving a crime to save the Jackalopes.

It's fun, engaging and interesting to the elementary crowd without being too basic, while the artwork and style can appeal to those less than enthusiastic.

The recommended age is for 8-11 year olds, and with a Lexile rating of 800 (the whole series ranges from 650-800, with the 650 being the first title) this has enough complexity to offer challenge to various levels of readers. Too often the books that are 'age appropriate' are not always 'content appropriate' so to speak, so this one is fun and good for the ones even younger who are reading well too.

Highly Recommended, and in this case I do prefer the paper book over the Kindle--the art is better that way!

The series in order:

Dragonbreath, Book 1
Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs
Dragonbreath: Curse of the Were-wiener
Dragonbreath: Lair of the Bat Monster
Dragonbreath: No Such Thing as Ghosts

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great adventure! January 26, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The Dragonbreath books are mind candy for the young reader, and rather fun for the grown-up, as well. Mixing text dominated pages with graphic novel-esque spreads, they are easy, friendly, and fast books to read. The stories about Danny, a young dragon with fire issues, and his pals, are strange and suspenseful (and often very funny), the illustrations are utterly brilliant in their simple humor and charm. And as an added bonus, there is now a central girl character--a lizard named Christina, who is smart and skeptical as all get out.

But when the gang (Danny, Christina, and Wendell) head off to cowboy camp, along with Danny's annoying little cousin, Spenser, not even Christina's skeptical mind can deny that the creature Spenser secretly befriends is a jackalope!!!!! Yes, horned bunnies are real...but this one seems to be the last of its kind. All its friends and family have disappeared....

And it's up to Danny and co. to solve the mystery, and foil the nefarious plot that threatens the survival of the jackalopes!

This book has one of my favorite Dragonbreath pictures ever--Danny grooming his horse. And the jackalope is cute as all get out (even cuter than the picture on the cover). The story has swing, and made me chuckle (poor smart Christina, stuck with a camp counselor determined to apply nail polish!), and a message about protecting endangered species from mankind's greed that I liked lots.
