Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this eighth volume of the Dragonbreath series, Danny and Suki must venture into Wendell’s mind to help him with his horrible nightmares. With Great-grandfather Dragonbreath’s help, they discover that a nasty Dream Wasp wants to lay its eggs in Wendell’s brain. The only thing that can help them is a baku—a Japanese dream-eater. Young readers will find another funny adventure with just enough scary bits and some comics pages (in black, white, and green) to keep the story moving. Series fans will grab this quickly, while new readers will want to find the earlier books. Grades 3-5, --Kat Kan

About the Author

Ursula Vernon is a birdwatcher and vivid dreamer, author of "Nurk" and the Dragonbreath series for kids. She won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story for her comic "Digger."  She lives in Pittsboro, North Carolina, where she works full-time as an artist and writer.

More About the Author

Ursula Vernon is the author and illustrator of "Nurk," "Digger," "Dragonbreath" and a number of other projects. The daughter of an artist, she spent her youth attempting to rebel and become a scientist, but eventually succumbed to the siren song of paint (although not before getting a degree in anthropology, because life isn't complete without student loans, right?). Her work has been nominated for an Eisner award, "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition" and a number of Webcomics Choice Awards. Her comic "Digger" won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2012, and her children's book "Dragonbreath" won the Sequoyah Award in 2013.

Ursula grew up in Oregon and Arizona, went to college at Macalester College in Minnesota, and stayed there for ten years, until she finally learned to drive in deep snow and was obligated to leave the state.

Having moved across the country several times, she eventually settled in Pittsboro, North Carolina, where she works full-time as an artist, writer, and creator of oddities. She lives with her boyfriend, his beagle, a small collection of cats, and a large collection of Indonesian masks, all of which mostly contrive to keep her out of trouble.

My husband and I have always been voracious readers and academic overachievers--NERDS. We couldn't find the words to express our frustration when our daughter who is "academically gifted" and in a special school with accelerated curriculum turned out to be a "reluctant reader". Although she earned straight As, she remained unmotivated to read and God knows we tried EVERYTHING while attempting to remain calm about it.

Somehow, we stumbled across this series. The well developed characters, page turning story lines, outstanding humor and illustrations not only engaged her; they hooked her! As we lay in bed, my husband and I could hear raucous laughter coming from our daughter's room long after we'd thought her to be asleep. Once she'd gotten up to speed with Dragonbreath, she moved on to other series and styles as MIss Vernon cannot supply our demand quickly enough!

Before we knew it, our reluctant reader had suddenly became a rabid reader!

Curious as to what was so funny, I read the book and enjoyed it so much that I highly recommended it to my husband. Once, while awaiting the next installment in the series my daughter wrote a letter to the author and "outted" my husband and me telling Ms. Vernon what huge fans we were (and remain to this day)!

I am so excited that the Dragonbreath series is still going strong, we have all of the books and now can happily add this one. It is a little darker than the other books but we are reading during the day time so as not to freak my 6 yr old out. She loves them! Great book!

Danny Dragonbreath is a favorite at our house. It's funny for both the kid and the grownup, if you are reading together. Actually pretty sly.

I bought these for a ten year old who had read one in school and he liked them so much that I have bought the whole series for him and will be buying more as they are available. I gave the 5 star because he loved them so much that he would not hardly put them down until finished.
