Book Description

September 1997
We meet him as a nameless stable boy. His only friend is Catryn, the servant girl, and even she doesn't know who he truly is. He is Dahl, the King of Taun, a once-beautiful land now on the brink of destruction. Hidden on earth since his birth, Dahl knows that the Usurper has stolen his rightful place on the throne of Taun and that he must someday rescue his homeland. But when the time comes, Dahl is plagued by doubt: "Can he do it? Does he have the courage to fight the Usurper? And what about Catryn who, despite his warnings, has slipped through time and space to be with him? This is a fantasy about good and evil, but with a twist.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Containing all the requisite literary ingredients of high fantasy, but lacking its usual protracted length, DRAGONFIRE would serve as an excellent introduction to the genre...High fantasy demands that the hero confront evil in a climactic, winner-take-all battle, and Bradford provides the necessary conflict, but with a surprise twist which will leave readers eager to discuss the book's theme. Though the various plot threads are tied up at DRAGONFIRE's conclusion, the uncertain futures of the central characters hint at a possible sequel." Recommended. -- Reviewed by Dave Jenkinson, Children's and Young Adult Literature Professor, University of Manitoba, Canadian Book Review Annual, 1998.

"Karleen Bradford's latest novel draws upon medieval cosmology, Jungian psychology, and classic adventure-suspense to produce an intelligent and entertaining fantasy for young readers." -- Reviewed by Bridget Donald, Quill & Quire, December 1997. Starred Review

"The sword fights and encounters with dragons that mark Dahl's struggle towards reclaiming his throne are only part of this story. At a deeper level, Dragonfire is powered by Dahl's relationship with what Carl Jung called the shadow: that darker, unknown side of oneself that must be met and embraced if true growth is to occur. Dahl's final battle with The Usurper is one of the most thrilling encounters with the shadow in children's literature." -- Reviewed by John Bemrose, Maclean's Magazine, November 1997.

"With DRAGONFIRE, (Bradford) shows that she can craft fantasy with...a deft sense for the telling detail...it's more than difficult to put the book down." -- The Edmonton Journal

Karleen Bradford, author of 14 YA novels, many of them historical fiction, moves confidently into high fantasy with DRAGONFIRE...Bradford uses the conventions of high fantasy well to create a fast-paced, intriguing adventure. But, like all good fantasies, this story is also an allegory for the human condition; even as Dahl grows more confident of his powers, he meets the dark side of his own personality and comes to realize that the dragon inside is more dangerous than the ones he can see. -- Reviewed by Barbara Greenwood, City Parent, April 1998

From the Author

"How many more books are you going to write before you die?" I was asked a couple of years ago by a nine year old boy at a school where I was doing a reading. I had to admit that I didn't really know. But I did know that one of them was going to be a fantasy. J.R.R. Tolkien stated that he "desired dragons with a profound desire" in his Andrew Lang essay on fairy tales, and I have always had the same obsession. DRAGONFIRE was an adventure and an exploration for me and I loved writing it. I have often had trouble keeping my female secondary characters down and Catryn, in this book, was no exception. There will be, therefore, a sequel to DRAGONFIRE, called WHISPERINGS OF MAGIC, which will be her own book. And then...? SHADOW OF EVIL lurks in my mind. Catryn and Dahl's twin sons...? END

More About the Author

I'm an award-winning writer of historical and fantasy fiction for children and young adults. Writing has always been a passion of mine, although when I was young I never thought that I could be a published author. I think I believed that all published writers were either dead or English, probably because, although I was born in Canada, I lived in Argentina until I went back for university. It was only after I was married and had children of my own that I got the idea of writing my own stories.

I followed the writer's usual path of rejection slips until I started selling short stories to magazines and school anthologies. It still took another six years until I finally published my first book. I've been writing ever since. You can check out my work at www.karleenbradford.com

During a school visit a young boy once asked me, "How many books are you going to write before you die?"

It's 23 and counting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragonfire is incredible!!!!, March 4, 2002
By
This review is from: Dragonfire (Paperback)
The novel Dragonfire written by Karleen Bradford is one of my favourite books! Bradford describes her characters in a way that makes them seem so real. In this novel fantasy was combined with adventure, and even though I never thought of fantasy as something I would enjoy, this book was way more than I expected! The mythical characters and conflicts became real to me and I couldn't put the book down. Dahl faces many problems, as he grows up learning that he is really the King of Taun, a kingdom that has been over taken by the evil Usurper. As Dahl tries to save his kingdom he discovers the true meaning of friendship, and realizes that the future of his people depends on him. The ending of this novel surprised me in a pleasant way and I couldn't wait to read the sequel. Over all this was a great book of good winning over evil. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for children of all ages, October 21, 2011
This review is from: Dragonfire (Paperback)
A unnamed stable boy, and his friend Catryn, a servant girl, are swept through a portal and back to the boy's home world - Taun. The boy's name is Dahl, and he is the rightful king of Taun, hidden away on Earth until he was discovered by the emissary of the Usurper. Now Dahl, along with his Protector - a shape-shifting wizard - and Catryn must find a way to defeat the Usurper and take back his kingdom, freeing his people from the bonds of evil and slavery.

This is a highly entertaining book, written for Middle Grade children, but containing themes and meanings that can be understood by and enjoyed by anyone, no matter their age. On its surface it is a typical battle of good versus evil, but dig a little deeper and you find hidden gold - acceptance of yourself and others, understanding of what needs to be done to give people freedom and self-respect, and how to learn to fight the blackness that lurks within everyone of us. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting fantasy turn, April 10, 2004

This is an original and well-wrritten fantasy story about a boy who lives in our world, but must go back to his own world to fight the Usurper. It's the first in a series of novels, but it's also a self-contained book (so you don't have to read all the books to make sense of the story). It moves from one world to another in fine fashion and features a powerful and moving ending.   I highly recommend it. Karleen Bradford is well known for her historical novels of the Crusades, this is her first foray into fantasy fiction.
