Dragonflies of the North Woods and other books in the North Woods Naturalist Series (Kollath Stensaas press) cover only species in the midwestern north woods, in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and northwestern Ontario. They do not cover species in the north woods of the northeastern United States and Canada, except insofar as some of the midwestern species are also found in the northeast.

I live in Maine, and I almost ordered three books from this series before I discovered the limited range of the books. I had always thought that Maine and northern New England were part of the north woods! To be accurate, and to be fair to potential buyers, the publisher should specify the covered area more precisely on the book covers, and amazon.com should specify it in the book information.

Great identification guide with a little natural history as well. The size of the dragonfly and flight period are very clearly presented. Some of the pictures are a little fuzzy, but they hit most of the need to know ID marks on the dragonfly. I am from Western New York, and this guide is helpful in this area as well. Damselflies of the northwoods is a good guide too. The whole Northwoods series is great. They cram a lot o info into a small book which is neccessary for the field. The drawings of the abdominal claspers are very helpful for narrowing the dragonfly down to a particular species. This is a great guide for beginners and season naturalists alike. Dragonflies and damselflies of Northeast Ohio is also excellent and a little more detailed, but not so good for the field.

Dragonflies of the North Woods is a wonderfully photographed, well organized and well written guide to midwest dragonflies. It's a concise yet comprehensive guide for the naturalist with sharp, detailed color photos, clear descriptions, range maps and a size guide. Helpful checklists, gear guide and appendix. Well done!

I have nearly every book by this publisher, and nearly all have a multitude of reviews, so I thought I'd chime in with this title, which to date has only three.

Dragonflies of the North Woods I bought in tandem with Damselflies of the North Woods and both have been extremely useful in the field as I observe and at home as I prepare to go out, or find a specimen that has perished that needs identification. North Woods books are always my first stop for identification matters as the layout is so easy to use and text so engaging.

The introduction is full of illustrative photos and touches of humor and lots of practical advice, moving into the species accounts which show the typical length of the species with a black bar along with other simple charts and symbols providing seasonality, rarity, and typical habitat of the species. Special features include special detailed views (thoraxes, claspers, etc.) of certain families and more standard ID stuff, along with behavioral characteristics that provide a richness to the reading and observation experience. The appendices are also helpful and even include a whimsical, if Eurocentric, little list of synonyms for "dragonfly."

Recommended for anyone who enjoys watching dragonflies who lives in the Midwest's Great Lakes area or for Odonate enthusiasts in general. A good model for any field guide.

I bought the 1st edition when it came out and it got a lot of field use(pretty banged up and occasionally got wet) so I decided to get the second edition. I'm very glad I did as there's some new photos and I love the new pages of "quick "in the hand" keys which will help immensely in identification. I'm sure that this edition will get just as much use, if not more! I'm working on the best way to preserve it.
