Book Description

August 26, 2003

Cloaked in the web's anonymity, part-Hopi computer hacker Laura Winslow is hiding from her past -- but it has found her in the Arizona desert. The daughter she lost years ago is now an angry young woman serving prison time. But Spider's agreement to help the authorities uncover an identity theft ring in exchange for leniency has led the police to a secret burial ground near Casa Grande Monument -- where mother and child are reunited . . . in terror.

The discarded bones are human, and they may be all that remain of dozens of inexplicably missing women. In this place of death and silence on Native American land, Laura Winslow fears for her daughter, who may be the next to die -- unless together they can expose an insidious evil blooming beneath the blind eyes of the law . . . the terrible beast that is now hunting them both.

2.0 out of 5 stars :-\, March 7, 2006

I'll admit, I didn't finish the book. But if the writing/editing is so sloppy that the main character's dog changes genders five times in three pages, I can't be bothered. What's that tell me the actual mystery part is going to be like, if the author can't even keep track of his pronouns on something that simple?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mystery, good investigative procedures, a fun read, April 6, 2004

This review is from: Dragonfly Bones (Mass Market Paperback)
I would highly recommend this book about part-Hopi computer hacker Laura Winslow. The story tells about how our hero, Laura, was lured out of semi-retirement and back into investigative action by the possibility of helping her 23-year-old daughter, whom she had not seen in many years. Interesting converging story lines about a world-wide line of exclusive brothels and about an identity theft ring set up by wireless network from a catalog phone-order center. You will really like and empathize with the clever Laura, and sympathize with her messed-up personal life. The plot is intriguing, and features a number of good, well-developed characters. I am going to see what other books there are by David Cole that I have not read - I _really_ enjoyed this book. I just got back from a long vacation during which I read a good number of mysteries and thrillers - this one was definitely my favorite! Read it today. Seriously.
(Although the bad guys' method of disposing of bodies using a wood chipper ala "Fargo" is a bit disturbing...)
