Dreamland,
By
This review is from: Dragonfly Heart: a collection of short fiction (Paperback)
Dragonfly Heart, a collection of short stories by Jeffrey Valka, is a treat if you are feeling dreamy...that is to say, if you relish the feeling you get when you wake up from a vivid dream, feeling as though you have just returned from a different, very vibrant world. Mr. Valka will take you there while you are wide awake--no naps required.
The stories are broken up into different sections, representing ten doors (paths into the unconscious mind, perhaps?). One narrator, or perhaps many, tells the tales; this does not really matter, though for this reader at least, the narrator represented one mind and many dreams, or at the very least many worlds. The perfect collection for a slow, hazy afternoon or that precious reading time when you're getting ready to fall asleep, Dragonfly Heart is a treat for the senses.

a journey into the subconscious,
This review is from: Dragonfly Heart: a collection of short fiction (Paperback)
A collection of short stories from the realms of the author's imagination. A trip through a spiral of subjects immersing the reader and sucking them in. The meanderings through life, death and psyche. Is Jeff Valka a mad genius? Only time will tell. A thoroughly entertaining and engaging read....

A very Pleasant Surprise,
By Denver Trouton (Edinburgh, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dragonfly Heart: a collection of short fiction (Paperback)
The stories in Dragonly Heart are very short, but they're addictive. I spent a day sitting in various cafes drinking tea and ended up reading the entire thing from cover to cover, having only intended to read the first section. It's lovely work. At times it's more like wandering around an art gallery than reading a book.
This isn't a collection of genre stories, they shift from dark humour to tragedy, to romance, to horror... You're never quite sure where it's going to take you next, but it's more about enjoying the journey than worrying about where it's going to end. This is one of those books that I sank into and I didn't realise how much I was enjoying it until it was finished. I hope to see more from the author soon. |
