Ziggy "Gets Out"!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragonfly (Audio CD)
The album "Dragonfly" may not be what some expect. It is a new, refreshing and insightful Ziggy who has matured and hopes to expand his musical skills further then ever before. The songs on Dragonfly range from political to deeply spiritual. No matter what type of music you are accustomed to, Dragonfly has something for you! His lyrics are a growth for him and certainly relevant and refreshing lyrics for todays music industry. Anyone who thinks that Ziggy should stick to just roots reggae is not getting the picture. In "I Get Out" Ziggy tells us "I of the universe won't be prisoner of your little world". Just like his father expanded what came to be expected of reggae music to English/Americans, Ziggy must continually search to find his own instead of depending on what he knows all reggae fans will buy. I'm not gonna go through the different songs, because much could be said about most of them, but I will definately say that the Dragonfly album is worth the money! Fans of music (roots reggae, rock, world, whatever) will find something interesting and intriguing in Dragonfly. With such a good quality of music, it's only unfortunate that the album wasn't longer (I believe they cut one song -"Uncle Sam"- because of politics and another -"The Song"- for some other reason). I would reccomend this album. If you enjoyed "Spirit of Music" or ANY other recent Melody Makers offerings you will certainly enjoy this, and if you dig good vibes this is definately the one!

Melody maker, genre shaker, image breaker,

Having been a Ziggy Marley & MM fan since 'Conscious Party', I am enjoying this new Ziggy solo disc in a big way. I love the way Ziggy's 'Dragonfly' experiments with all the fine shades between modern reggae, rock, rhythm & blues, worldbeat, and even some folk and country all the while letting his distinct vocals keep us rooted in more signature territory. As usual, it's a record of self-reflection, political concerns, and love in it's many forms.Highlights: "True To Myself" - 'Pop hit single' written all over it; if this song doesn't [make] the top 40, there is no justice. "I Get Out" - Lyrics to this amazingly intense track makes me wonder what kinds of industry []Ziggy has to suffer through just to make rewarding music. "In The Name Of God" - The kind of song John Lennon used to write, and nowadays nobody has the brass ones to write any more, until now. "Never Deny You" - Just an absolutely beautiful song about the power of true friendship and faith. I grew up listening to reggae master Bob Marley and his progeny carries his musical legacy so very well. You'll likely buy a good two dozen albums in the next year; but you'll still be playing this one come next April.

And....I love it. I was at the record store and saw Dragonfly and I knew immediately that I would "have to have it". First of all, I was so excited that he had new music out, but secondly, I was more excited that it was going to be a new sound w/o the Melody Maker and Stephen even though I love them, too.Dragonfly is awesome. It takes a few times of playing this CD in order to start craving Ziggy's new sound. But once you are familiar with the melodies, you will love it especially because Ziggy collaberates with other artists on the album, one of which is Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They sound great together. He also does a song with his sister that is also wonderful. They need to do more!!! Ziggy is soulful, insightful, beautiful, cool...his vibe and energy capture my soul more than any other artist other than Bono. His spirt will touch yours if you let it. The best song on the album is track 10: Never Deny You - It is killer! It sounds soooo good, the beat, the chorus - this is one song that you will play over and over again. Track 2-"True to Myself" is also another soulful, good vib'in song. If you are into equal human rights and spiritual about life and feeling good, and being real, then this album is for you - buy it and go see him LIVE. He rocks, and he will rock your spirit.

Ziggy without the fam - even better than before!,

It's hard to top the sound of Ziggy Marley and the Melodymakers, but this album which is touted as his 'official solo debut' (even though some of the siblings sing on it from the liner note credits) rocks! It's still definitely a reggae album, how can it NOT be with Ziggy(?) but definitely has a much more pop feel to it. I've heard "True To Myself" on the radio a bit but not other songs, personally "Rainbow in the Sky" is one of the more reggae-style songs on the album that really grooves. "Dragonfly" has a really beautiful melodic line that Ziggy sings, talking all about how man needs to take care of the environment that he is also destroying. Most "interesting" song is Shalom Salaam, obviously focusing on the Israel/Palestine conflict. I think it's a great album, especially for this time of year when the weather gets warmer, our spirits get brighter, and you just want that FEEL GOOD music for the end of your work day!

An Amzing Emotionally Triggered Album,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dragonfly (Audio CD)
Ziggy Marley has made a great contribution to the music industry with this reggae/blues/rock fusion album. The lyrics written by Stephen Marley are exceptional and intellectual, but it is Ziggy's voice that has blown me away. The first song on the album, Dragonfly, starts the album off with an environmental awareness message. The acoustic guitar makes the vocals understandable and better sounding. Some more great songs are; True to Myself, Shalom Salaam, Looking, In the Name of God, and Deny, but the whole album takes the breath out of everyone who experiences it. This album is a must get, and is one of my favorites of all time. I DEFINITELY RECOMEND "DRAGONFLY!!!!"

This is a good album for Ziggy's first solo project, but it is inconsistant. I bet if you asked Ziggy about this album he would say that its "experimental." The experiment is about half successful and half unsuccessful. Half of the songs have nice grooves, great lyrics, and a fun style. The other half of the songs are too rock/pop influenced for my taste. The best songs are Dragonfly, True To Myself, Shalom Salaam, and Rainbow In The Sky. The worst songs are the last three on the cd. If you don't already own Love Is My Religion by Ziggy, get that first because it is his best album. This is good, but not as essential as Love Is My Religion.

Ziggy Carrying on His Father's Legacy, And Then Some...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragonfly (Audio CD)
I just saw Ziggy live at an art and music festival in Oakland on Sunday, and I was absolutely blown away (Beforehand, I already knew he would be excellent, being that he is Bob Marley's son, but that's beside the point.)! As soon as the performance was over, I knew I had to get the album. What doing so has done is made me an ardent fan of both Ziggy's and his father's music. The many similarities with his father aside (i.e. vocal style, a knack for writing intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics, and the like), Ziggy is a superb singer-songwriter in his own right. His musical arrangements for the songs on the album practically approach pure genius, two notable examples being "Melancholy Mood" (a track in which, with very little instrumentation, Ziggy and his band manage to create a song with a very jazzy feel to it) and the last track, "Don't You Kill Love" (the techno-ish sound of this song is very interesting, and it fits perfectly with Ziggy's vocal). He also demonstrates that he is capable of creating music of many diverse styles. The album includes musical genres ranging from his reggae roots (i.e. "True To Myself", "Good Old Days", and "Shalom, Salaam", which is also an excellent commentary on the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians), pop-influenced folk (the title track and "Looking"), reggae-influenced hip-hop ("Rainbow In The Sky") to straight rock ( the reggae-tinged "I Get Out" and "In The Name of God", an introspective reflection on the various ways religion is used in a negative way). For me, this is one of those albums that is enjoyable to either sing to or just sit and listen. I highly recommend it, and I am definiely looking forward to hearing more from Ziggy.

I bought this album about a month ago. I love these songs. Ziggy Marley is a beautiful person mind, body, & soul. This album all of the songs are postive messages about peace, love, and truth. My favorite songs are True To Myself, I Get Out, & In The Name Of God. I relate the most to these, but the whole album is tight (good). all I can say is buy it. it's more then well worth it. also if you can see him in concert it's a unforgetable experince. Most likly the best show you will ever have see, and for right now the best album you will buy.
