3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but flawed.
These books were entertaining page-turners; the story wasn't completely original but it definetly made me want to keep reading. Some of the characters (such as the mysterious mage Raistlin and the annoying kender Tas) were very interesting and well-drawn; others (such as Sturm, Flint, and even Tanis at times) felt flat.

I'll start with Sturm. (Don't keep...

The first time you read it, you truely will be taken to the world of Krynn and stay there for quite some time. The Chronicles trilogy was the first set of fantasy books I ever read. Weis and Hickman got me hooked right from the beginning! Now, after nearly a decade since I last read this trilogy, they've managed to hold me in their spell again. I've missed reading them and would recommend both vetrans and novices of the DragonLance novels to (re)read the Chronicles trilogy. You'll grow to love and hate the characters - but what sets them apart, is that you also share the same emotions that the characters are feeling. Truely, only master writers of literature are able to envoke such a response in their readers, and we have two, Weis and Hickman, to thank for that. Sit back, relax, and let the world of Krynn open before you!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING TRILOGY!!!, February 21, 2004
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Definitely a great fantasy epic and one of my personal favorites, The Chronicles Trilogy- Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning, brings to life the ultimate battle between Good and Evil in the World of Krynn. The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. The authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have truly outdone themselves and have presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work and RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies. Duty, honor, bravery, magic, dragons and heroes are all about. A great trilogy indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Fantasy Epic, September 10, 2002
The Dragonlance Chronicles (recommended to me by a friend) were my first foray into the world (an entire realm in itself) of fantasy literature at the bookstore several years ago. I had no clue what I was getting myself into, but I purchased the books and, being an avid reader, immediately devoured the first book in the trilogy. I must say that I was completely blown away by Ms. Weis and Mr. Hickman.

This world, these stories, and these characters are by far some of the most detailed, realistic and true to life characters- even if you have never met a dwarf. By reading the first few chapters alone, the descriptive powers of these two amazing authors make you feel like you've known the characters, their entire races' histories, and you can almost FEEL the tension in the air when the characters are in danger. A truly amazing read indeed, second only to Tolkien's works but only because Tolkien was more influential and came first.

Think elves are little midgits who make toys? Don't know your dragons from your wyverns? Well this is a great place to start learning about the wonderful world of fantasy literature. You couldn't pick a better, easier to understand, yet complex story that is ultimately about human nature's frailty and it's wavering between good and evil, yet still holding much sway in the universe. Go buy this. Now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly Entertaining, February 16, 2004

I've read this series at least 3 times, it's one of the few books that I've done so. I've read many books in the Fantasy Genre, the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, The Sword of Truth series by Goodkind, The Song of Fire and Ice series by JRR Martin, and the Lord of the Rings, by Tolkien.

The Lord of the Rings is simply the best written fantasy book ever, as far as the world is concerned.

WoT and SoT are a "Product line" and not a story that's going to ever end. While entertaining at first, there's only so much world discription that one can handle

Song of Fire and Ice is expertly written, and has some of the best plotting of any fantasy book out there.

So this brings me to this series.

Two words come to my mind when reading these books: Fun and Entertaining.

The words are in simple English.
The world is secondary to the story and the characters.
There isn't an abundance of difficult names and characters to remember.

The story moves along, at a good pace.

For a good fun read, check out these books, the authors do not dissapoint.

For a complex read, Lord of the Rings.

For a not-so-complex, but I like bad things to happen to good people read... Song of Fire and Ice by Martin. (Excellently written books by the way)

WoT and SoT should only be used as a time filler.

So, if you're new to the genre. Read these books first, then Martin, then LoTR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Books, Great Bargain, November 7, 2004

I won't try to give an in-depth review of all three books, I've written one for the first and I'll get the next two reviews written shortly, if you really need my opinion :D

However, I bought all three books individually, and I paid half again as much as you'd pay getting this boxed set. This is a great bargain, and frankly you don't often see very good discounts on fantasy paperbacks.

I recommend all three of these novels, and the Twins Trilogy, and the Raistlin Chronicles. You are far better off buying the boxed set here than buying the books indivudually. The books won't disappoint, and the price can't be beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid storytelling and a very mature plot for any age, October 30, 2004
By
Akio Furumura (CPSLO, California) - See all my reviews
The Dragonlance Chronicles Trilogy. Even though its a fanstasy book, this series has a unimaginable amount of unexpected twists. The books are great, really. The writing is solid and there is everything from broken hearts, betrayals up the ying yang, deaths of central characters (no, they don't come back to life with a resurrection spell), unexpect reunions, lost chances, regret, and falls from grace; all of which is set in a world of swords and magic and dragons. But the characters are more interesting than the swords, magic, and dragons could ever be.

I have to disagree with the comparisons to Tolkien's work. There are certain plot elements that are essential for any type of fantasy work, but you can't argue against the fact that the basic plotlines of these two trilogies are totally different: one is searching for something to help with a problem, the other has already found something and seeks destroy it in order to remedy the problems it brings. Maybe the reviewers just see simple similarities, such as larger parties being split, but that's something that happens in a lot of fantasies in order to keep it from becoming stagnant. Whether the authors may or may not have had inspiration from Tolkien, the story really is their own.

Anyway, this is an incredibly solid story that's about more than just dragons and swords. I recommend this to anyone looking for good books that stir the emotions. However, you may need to be over a certain age and have experienced certain events to really appreciate it. Go and read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for fantasy fans., June 14, 2001
By
This compilation seems to be out of print at the time, but it's still worth buying the 3 books separately. I read this compilation several years ago and still remember how much it suprised me. I got it as a present and felt suprised by the really addictive writing style of Weis and Hickman. Being a Tolkien fan I had a "Pff, this won't come close to the master's work" moment from my snob side when I first looked at it. It was my first Dragonlance title, and while I enjoy fantasy titles (but don't read as much of it as I used to), I now often recommend this compilation of 3 titles for anyone who is just trying to take a first look at fantasy worlds. Yes, it is not as masterful and rich as Tolkien, but it is perhaps much more accessible to new fantasy readers, and at the same time, appealing even to the most demanding fans. Very good work, often delicious. You'll be turning pages at high speed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragonlance Chronicles, January 4, 2000
When I first bought this book I was expecting another hack and slash tale of warriors and dragons. After reading it I discovered how far I was from the truth. The tale that was contained was one of love, adventure and sorceries that I will never forget. The characters are like old friends, the enemies just as easy to remember. From their humble beginnings in Solace to the final confrontation with the Queen of Darkness, I couldn't put this book down. Having read many fantasy novels, I could easily say that Dragonlance Chronicles is easily comparable to Lord of the Rings and the Thomas Covenant series. The two authors are true masters of creating a world so rich that it becomes a second home. If you haven't read this book, read it. It is a truly enlightening experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this series no more then 5 times, August 16, 2004

I grew up with these books. I read them as a young one, through high school, college, and I just read them again at the age of 32. This trilogy and the one that followed are legendary in my opinion. It does follow a similar plot to LOTR however I connected with these books and its character a lot more then the rambling LOTR. To this day, in D&D realms, people still name their character "Raislin", "Tanis" and "Sturm". These books are LEGENDS to the D&D community. The connection you will gain from the characters of these books will stay with you for years. It is always a pleasure to return to Solstice! Don't let Tasslehoff get close to your bags, your purse may have accidentally appeared in his bags... after you dropped it of course, he was just holding it for you and forgot to tell you. I have a best friend (40 years old) who named his daughter Raistlin after these books.. they are that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can Words Describe it?, March 31, 2000
By
Nerddling (Bloomfield, Michigan) - See all my reviews
I am a devoted fantasy reader, and I have read everything from Jordon's extrodinary masterpieces to Pullman's delightful sagas, and I must admit that The DragonLance Chronicals is, without a doubt, one of the best series of fantasy novels I have ever read. Wies and Hickman have created a world where you can get lost in it for hours and regret when you must leave. The books are vivid and colorful, almost real, with characters you come to know and love as if they were old friends or hate with a unquenchable fury. Whenever the mood gets to somber or depressing, humor comes to the rescue in the form of an irrepresable kender or a befuddled old wizard. If you are looking for some books to pass the hours with, one of the best choices is, in my opinion, DragonLance.
