Less in This Omnibus Than Past Editions of the "Legends",
By
This review is from: Dragonlance Legends: A Dragonlance Novel (Paperback)
This review focuses on the 2011 omnibus edition of the Dragonlance Legends and not the trilogy of books included in this collection. If I was giving the Dragonlance Legends a review on the merits of the books, I would give it 4.5 stars--but this is at least the third time that publishers have released a version of the three books together and they have done nothing to improve the previous omnibus collections. Earlier editions had notes from the two authors--indeed, the annotated version of the Legends had detailed notes that gave a good deal of insight into the writing process (as well as too many ads for other Dragonlance books and Tracy Hickman going off in the weeds to gush about Joseph Campbell and mythology). This collection is a step back from the previous versions and readers who have loved Krynn and the epic tale of Tas, Raistlin, Caramon, Crysiana, etc. over the last two decades will be disappointed by this version. After more than 20 years in print, the publishers could have--and should have--included new material such as notes or reflections from the authors. As I noted, I would give the actual stories 4.5 stars. This is an epic adventure with characters that are generally well developed. Unlike the Chronicles, Weis and Hickman are not pulling the stings on too many characters. This is an epic story about family, love, redemption and ambition--and the struggles between good and evil. I cheerfully recommend this book to new readers but there is no reason for veterans of Krynn to pick up this edition.

This review is from: Dragonlance Legends (Dragonlance Legends Paperback) (Paperback)
The War of the Lance has ended. The world has become peaceful again. Or has it?? The Arch-Mage Raistlin Majere, Master of the Tower of Palanthas, Master of the Past and Present, seeks more power. Through his Art, he intends to challenge the gods. The Priestess Crysania seeks to stop him, but in her attempts, she begins to become drawn to him, the light of her goodness blinding her from the truth. The Warrior Caramon, once a great hero, now turned the town drunk. After the war, without his brother, Caramon felt un-needed. When his wife kicks him from his house, he goes on a journey of looking. Intending just to find Crysania and then follow her for a while, Caramon is over his head as he and the happy-go-lucky kender, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, are thrust through time in a mission to "save a soul, nothing more. Nothing less." Tasselhoff Burrfoot, the little, curious kender, joins his friend Caramon in Caramon's travels, and by entering a time traveling spell, he enables time to be changed. And thus, Raistlin takes the place of the great mage Fistandantilus, he goes on with his twin, in the place of the General, Pheragas, to fight the Dwarf Gate Wars and gain enterance to the portal to the Abyss. With the entrance of the kender, Tasslehoff, into the river of time, the original outcome of the past can be altered completely.

Best books I've ever read!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragonlance Legends (Dragonlance Legends Paperback) (Paperback)
Continuing the great Dragonlance chronicles, these books are GREAT!!! The intricate plot leaves you constantely wondering: 'What will happen next?', even moreso than the previous books. Some parts of this book too, as the previous ones, are sad and even depressing, and you wish for them to just alter it. However, that's what has made the Dragonlance saga great, and will continue to do so for years to come...
The plot of the book is centered around two twin brothers, opposite as night and day. Caramon, being an earlier warhero, now a town drunk, believes in the ways of goodness and honesty. Raistlin, however, chose to become a dark mage during the war to gain his own power.
As Raistlin goes looking for power, he drags his brother along with him back through time. Also coming with them, are Tasslehoff; a funny little creature from the Kender race, and Crysania; a cleric of the good God Paladine.
Personally, I loved the book, always trying to figure out what would happen next. At times I thought I had this figured out, only to be proven dead wrong. As I closed in upon the last fifty pages I was sure they would not be able to end it properly, as there were too many things unsolved. But believe me; They DID!!
