A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dragonology: Pocket Adventures (Ologies) (Hardcover)
I am eleven and I got this for Christmas. I really really like dragons, I was pleasantly surprised by this new Dragonology installment. This is similar to the Choose-your-own adventure series, there are four stories, including The Iceland Wyrm, The Dragon Star, The Dragon Dance, and The Winged Serpent. These are all great stories. I encourage you to buy this.

A disappointment,

I bought this for my 9 year old, who enjoys all things dragonology. Boy, were we ever disappointed. These books are listed at 160 pages, but what it doesn't say is 160 pages total, the books are only about 5 inches tall and about 1/3 of an inch thick, each. The description says that it will entertain for hours on end, it took my son about 1/2 hr to read them (and that was with him reading them slowly) and he hasn't picked them up since.

This was a fantastic gift for my son's birthday. He loved it and actually read almost all of the books the day he got it. Now he can display it in his dragon themed bedroom. He is beaming with joy.

A lot of fun in a small package!,

This is a set of four tiny (maybe 5" x 5") choose-your-own-path books, each centering on a specific task involving a specific type of dragon. They're actually quite good as choose-your-owns, with a variety of options (all but one of which results in extremely colorful death!), a few facts about the country in which the adventure is set, and usually with an extra task or two involving decrypting a secret message - quite a bit of fun in such a small package. (I'm a long-time fan of choose-your-own-adventure books, and while these are necessarily short, they still present a more interesting variety of options than many of the full-sized adventure-path books I've read!)
One book is set in Iceland in 1879, with the goal to investigate and deal with reports of a rogue frost dragon. There are tidbits of Icelandic geography (and, more significantly, geology!), and while some of the choices are apparently random, many of them do require some thought - or at least, if you think them through you're more likely to make the choice that will lead to success. [Personally, I like to try out all the paths if I can, to check out the possible disasters!] Another is set in Europe in 1880, and involves the search for a legendary and powerful gem, the Dragon Star, before it falls into the hands of the "dark Dragonologists". The choices here include the usual which-way-do-we-go's, but also whether to fiddle around with an artifact, or how to get into a secret room, and there are two different types of coded messages to decipher - fun! The third book is set in Australia in 1873, and has a nicely-humorous tone even amid the many risks - most of which are actual perils of the Australian outback! The mission here is to find and relocate a "marsupial dragon" that's about to attack a gold-mining settlement. There's an opportunity to decipher a Morse code message, and to properly execute a "dragon dance" to charm the renegade dragon... Yes, it's silly, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. The fourth adventure is set in Colombia in 1900, and requires getting a dragon to help recover golden treasure stolen by thieves from a serpent... Easy, right? There are hints of history, lots of hazardous jungle and ruins to explore, a secret message in Spanish [clues provided], and another message coded in semaphore! [This one includes the discovery of a skeleton, a feature I always enjoy in my adventures {grin}.] All told, a very entertaining bundle-of-books. I sincerely hope that the "Ology" folk are planning another set of choose-your-own books, perhaps based on Monsterology - or, even better, Piratology, arrrr!
