I remember reading this book over and over as a child, perhaps even as early as age 7 or 8. I don't know where we got our copy, but it would have been a couple of years old even then.

I didn't understand the concept of a short story in those early readings; I thought I was reading a chapter book that just didn't connect very well for some strange reason.

A few of the stories are a bit chilling for a kid, but in that delicious kind of way. I think this book strongly influenced my imagination and my literary interests over time. From the monster that two kids escape from by using Oreos to magic subway coins that send native New Yorkers into alternate worlds, this collection is full of original ideas and well-written prose that I remember enjoying time and again. With the used copies as cheap as they are, I definitely recommend picking it up.
