Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The beguiling, bright blue star of three previous early readers here deals with the trials and tribulations of adoptive parenthood as only he can. "One snowy day in January," Dragon rescues a gray tabby from the elements and names it Cat. So far, so good--but such problems as how to train his new friend and what to feed it prove vexing. Worst of all, "Dragon did not know what to do about all the yellow puddles Cat made." With the help of the pet store's accommodating sales pig, Dragon, Cat and some unexpected additions settle in blissfully for a long winter's nap. As in the previous titles, humor and sentiment are adroitly whipped into a seemingly effortless souffle. Pilkey's narrative understatement and cheery, heavily defined artwork once again form a humorous, harmonious whole. Ages 6-8.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-2-- The loveable blue dragon stars in his fourth book for beginning readers. This time, he rescues a fat gray cat from freezing in the snow, decides to keep it, and quite logically names it ``Cat.'' The only problem is that Dragon knows nothing about caring for pets, or the smelly puddles they leave. When he finally gets to the pet store for advice, he leaves with all the things Cat will need to live comfortably, but forgets Cat. When Dragon finally finds his new companion, he is in for quite a surprise. The simple cartoon illustrations in vibrant watercolor and pencil enhance the gentle humor of the story and the characters as well. A book that will be loved by Dragon's fans, and one that's sure to win him many new friends. --Rachel Fox, Port Washington Pub . Lib . , NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragon learns how to take care of a pet, June 1, 1999
This one had my kids cracking up - including the 15 year olds that I teach! Dav Pilkey tells a wonderful tale of taking care of a cat - including the cat's "smelly problem". Dragon's interpretation of "litter box", as well as his unique system for naming cats provides many laughs. There are lots of little eyecatchers in Pilkey's fantastic illustrations - look for pig-tail bait, and van Gogh's Starry Night, and the crumpled fender (from Dragon Gets By).

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragon's Fat Cat, September 16, 2001
By A Customer
This early chapter book was given to my son by his preschool teacher as a reward for potty training. He was thrilled because it was his first chapter book which meant that he was one of the big boys. That was three years ago and it is still his favorite book to read. The chapters are short enough that you can read the entire book to children before bedtime. It's funny, well written and wonderfully illustrated - the best book he has out of a collection of at least 50 books. I am in the process of trying to find the entire series for him. Definety a don't miss!
