an entirely believable Clancy-esque futuristic thriller,
By Joanie "joanie-f" (Denver, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
Having been intimately involved with this project from its inception several years ago, I have experienced something akin to birthing pains with the publication of each of the five volumes, and this collector's edition represents the end of a labor of love. :)
In all five volumes, Jeff exhibits a Clancy-like gift (actually in many aspects superior to Clancy, to my mind) that allows him to maintain as many as a dozen or more simultaneous story-lines, intricately knitting each separate piece of the larger puzzle together just often enough that the reader 'remembers' the common thread that runs through them all. He also exhibits a masterful understanding of world history, current events, and military strategy, and a detailed knowledge of missile/ship/satellite/weapons functions, origins, capabilities and terminology. The human element is also extraordinarily well portrayed. This isn't simply a cold, facts-and-figures account of World War III. During my attempts at editing, I came across many deeply touching, or deeply tragic, or deeply uplifting parts of the story that either brought me to the verge of tears, or left me with a major lump in my throat. Yet, to my mind, the most appealing aspect of this series is its believability. Anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of the state of the world - especially the obsessive and violent nature of Muslim fanaticism - will be justifiably chilled by the realization that all of the horrors contained within the covers of these volumes are not out of the realm of possibility. Yet (even more importantly), anyone with a belief in God, and the understanding that, no matter man's arrogant undertakings, He is always in control, will close the books, after reading the final chapter, reassured that, so long as we as a nation look to Him for the strength, wisdom and guidance to face any foe, He will provide us the necessary tools with which to prevail. Jeff Head has written a superb account of possible catastophic future events, but has tempered it with an optimism that leaves the reader both recognizing the need to confront the evil in this world, and understanding just what it will take to defeat it.

Epic World War III Techno-thriller Saga,
By BillPJ (LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
Having read and reviewed all five volumes of this series, I can truthfully say the entire tale kept me enthralled, interested and excited right up to the end.
As the freedom loving republics of the world engage in a seven year long struggle against the greatest tyranny, enslavement, and atrocity that the world has ever known...you find yourself wondering right up to the end if the enemy will not pull something out of the hat to reverse things. And they do pull horrific things out of the hat that come close to undoing all of the progress made by the United States and her allies. But even more than a tale of warfare and technology, which this series has been, in my estimation, and epic of...the story line really reveal its depth and goodness in the lives of the people involved, and the punctuation that is made regarding morality, reason and the other underlying principles the make the type of liberty possible in the United States possible. Despite all of the horror and hardship...this story stands as a monument to faith, the timeless struggle of good against evil and, the level of commitment that makes the eventual triumph of good over evil possible. There is enough historical background and precedence written into and described in rich detail in this series that I can recommend it not only to those who love the military techno-thriller genre...but to anyone interested in an uplifting experience regarding the points I just made. Thanks a lot Mr. Head...you provided me with days of great reading and left me with good feelings, despite the concerns raised by the series about current geo-political circumstance.

Wide-ranging, years-long, modern World War III saga,
By T. Johnson (DFW) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
I have read and reviewed each of the individual novels and then discovered that there is this hardback that contains all five.
I am honestly excited to find this out and will add the hardback to my library because the five novels it represents were so very good! This is, simply stated, the best overall, modern World War III story on the market today. Naval battles and strategy, Air Force, Amry, Marines, Amphibious assault, espionage, terror, weapons of mass destruction, geo-political intrigue, high tech weaponry, research and development, space warfare, asymetrical warfare...this novel has it all with a wide cast of real-life characters...many of whom die (including some of the most major characters) along the way...whose every day lives are impacted in compelling ways by the overall war story. Highly recommended with five stars. I hope some day Mr. Head and this series are picked up by a major publication house as the entire thing is apparently self-published. This series deserves major publication.

A prescient epic WW-III scenario,
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
The Dragon's Fury series layed out a predictive geopolitical scenario wherein an alliance between China, India, and a Greater Islamic Republic join forces against the United States and its few remaining allies. We're watching this Islamic Republic take shape today, in pretty much the form predicted by Mr. Head almost a decade ago. The minor differences between his fictional story and current reality can easily be overlooked in light of the real-life ramifications that are sure to follow.
As for China turning militant against the US, we are rapidly approaching the economic stimulus for such a case. If nations start defaulting on their national debt, as many are perched to do today (2011), a domino effect of national defaults will occur, and we will have the catalyst for another world war. China's military buildup continues unabated, while our defenses are being undermined by enemies within, day by day. India's role in the fictional story as a half-hearted member of the enemy alliance is easily predictable due to its geographic location and its large minority of muslims. Critics seem to focus on a few spelling and editing errors, which should be expected in a self-published series. What they seem to miss are the warnings this story provided about the economic and political stage being set for the current precarious state of the nations. I read each of the paperback versions as they became available, then got the consolidated hardback version when it became available. We have some difficult years ahead, and with the Dragon's Fury series, Mr. Head described the framework for most of the global events we see unfolding. I disagree with the author that the overall population of the United States will unite in the face of overwhelming odds. What I see still is a large minority of enemies within who continue to actively work with all our enemies against the best interests of the United States and her citizens. I sincerely hope history proves him correct in this respect.

Epic, spellbinding, sobering potential future,
By Lynn (Deleware) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
With all of the talk now days about Red China and its military buildup...not the least of which was the US Defense Department's latest study...this book is very timely and very sobering in its scenario of a future war between the United States and its allies and Red China and its allies, which grow to include the fundamental ISlamic nations.
I found the character development extremely well done...continuing with dozens of different characters throughout a five volume series. Some major characters are lost on both sides...others are added to fill out the myriad viewpoints from which the tale is told. The battle scenes and intrigue are exciting and spellbinding...and very believable. It is a vast canvas Mr. Head paints, covering most of the world and the saga of a world war wider in scope than World War II. As to the one reviewer's comments about the one particular Chinese name...it is clear that Mr. Head intends for his characters to be vieled and fictional representation of actual people. In those instances, the names are simply close approximations of the real world characters. The true fictional names he develops are all very accurate. As to the grammar and spelling...I did not notice too terribly many...but they were there. I notice that Mr. Head self-published the work so that explains a lot. They were not distracting to me...and I have found similar errors in fully, main-stream published works, with all the high paid editors in the world. Guess it just depends on your view of the world and how Mr. Head shapes it up in this fictional story. ...and to be sure, it is clear that Mr. Head has strong feelings about vartious current issues affecting our world and he is quite strong in his voicing of them throughout the work. I did not find this distracting because he wove it in with believeable characters (which mirror our real world) who feel this way. All in all I give it five stars and urge anyone interested in modern military strategy, current geo-political maneuverings, or just a good old fashioned stirring thriller to get the book. If those are your interests (as they are mine), I do not believe you will be disappointed.

A Corny speech and a bunch of super duper duper weapons,
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
This review is really typical of Books published by writers like Tom Clancy etc. The Title states World war against America and the West, but the word west is useless. It should be America and the Super America. like peter griffin says Jaws and Big jaws. The Book pays minimum attention to the names, history and customs of the rest of the of the world.
Book is about a war between US vs India, china, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, the islamic world and every other nation. Reason: for resources. Verdict: US kicks all kinds and all colors of A** and emerges victorious. Does the Author realize that president Bush enjoyed higher ratings in India than US from 2004-2008 and the chances of India aligning with China is minimal. Singapore will probably support US than China. and one can show a billion reasons, but the book is a hypothetical situation where everybody hates US for some odd reason, but US is the good guy, but the rest are all bad. The book is a boring lecture on how one should not underestimate American capabilities and the greatness of American people blah, blah blah and more Blah. By the end of book i got nauseous of all the preaching. Does any one think, that in this age any country will invade any other country to just occupy it and colonize it. But the names of weapons are funny, flying submarines and weapons whose ideas date to Howard Hughes. This book is for a particular audience and if you dont belong to it you will hate it.

I enjoyed this series very much. A frightningly real possible senario. Especially with the latest news on the rise of China. They see us as a road block to their supremacy is Asia and the rest of the world.

I tore through this book and enjoyed it. I havn't read a book of this scope and magnitude since Red Storm Rising. Besides a few unrealistic I tore through this book and enjoyed it. I haven't read a book of this scope and magnitude since Red Storm Rising. Besides a few unrealistic turn of events like Americans armed to the teeth wouldn't start shooting each other over road rage and starbucks lines. I remember the 1980s paranoia over corporate Japan taking over the world but China is definitely a threat on a level to what's portrayed here in this book. They contributed huge sums of money to the previous Clinton presidential campaign and instruct countries like North Korea and Iran when to pop off. Now Russia is trying to return to the old ways by cozening up to the red banner of China. This story is completely possible but let's not forget it's categorized as fiction not prediction here.

Page Turner worth reading,

This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
This genre of book is not normally something that I read, but within the first few pages, I couldn't stop reading. Like others have said, the author has a talent in weaving stories together with climactic battles to keep the reader engaged. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone.

beleivable story line,
This review is from: Dragon's Fury - World War against America and the West (Hardcover)
This five volume set has a very believable story line.
It is set in the very near future and the conflict between the USA and it's allies and China and it's allies has come to pass. Jeff Head has put together characters, story lines, facts, and figures and created a very plausible scenario for the future of the world scene. If anything, Jeff may be too optimistic about the actions, and reactions, of different countries throughout the world, but that takes nothing away from the story. If you are looking for a page turner, in a somewhat Clancey style, you could do no better than this set. |
