Book Description

September 1993 5 and upDragons
More than anything, Dragon wants to be scary for Halloween. But "scary" is barely in his sweet blue nature. In these three new easy-to-read tales, Dragon's shenanigans will be met with loving laughter as Dav Pilkey's warm story cascades with childhood feelings and pictures them wittily. Full-color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-This fifth book about Dragon is just right for beginning readers who want to be scared, but not too scared. In three episodes, Dragon cleverly turns six small, unimposing pumpkins into a tall, frightening jack-o-lantern; accidentally wears the most fearsome costume at a Halloween party; and is frightened by his own moaning and groaning hungry stomach as he walks home through a dark forest. Pilkey's bright, bold watercolors complement and visually enhance the text. Young readers will laugh out loud as they enjoy this scary Halloween from a safe vantage point. A nice, reassuring companion to Van Leeuwen's Oliver & Amanda's Halloween (Dial, 1992).

5.0 out of 5 stars 4-yo's favorite Halloween book this year, November 8, 2009

This review is from: Dragon's Halloween (Hardcover)
This book is super. It's organized like a mini chapter book, with a table of contents. My 4-year old was very excited about this.

Dragon, the main character, is so lovable--he makes the cutest mistakes, either by having too small pumpkins or wearing too many costumes--and works out his problems with his friends, always with a funny ending to each story.

This was the one book that, of all of her Halloween books, had to be read -every- night, sometimes twice per night, for the entire month of October.

There are a lot of phonetic elements that she really enjoyed, as well, and the words are generally simple, so after a read or two your child is recognizing the words as prompts to a partially memorized story (very pre-reading, with cues from the first few letters of the word).

Love this book, had to order a copy because taking it back to the library was a sad day for the whole family!
