This is the first disc by Halvorson I bought and I keep coming back to it to hear the bare bones sounds of a trio as each member can't hide behind a lush arrangement and everybody acquits themselves well. Mary has spent an extended amount of time with Anthony Braxton's various groups and it's obvious that she brings a unique voice to interpret his music. Here left to her own devices she alternates between playing clean Jim Hall like lines and noisy uses of electric technique to create a wall of skronk in the title cut which is very effective. She's very much a guitarist of her time and subsequent releases have shown her fulfilling her potential. I'll have a chance to see her in concert with bassist Stephen Crump in a month and I'm very much looking forward to it.

I guess you'd have to call this "avant-garde", because it sounds better than "confused and noisy". Many of the tracks on
this CD - especially "Dragon's Head" - sound like the musicians are actually a bunch of chimps who have just seen
their instruments for the first time and are trying to figure out how they work, with unintentionally comical results.
Or maybe, somebody in the control booth listened to Ms. Halvorson and her band, and decided that all they could do
was make a huge racket and market it as "avant-garde" so they could charge extra for it. Sorry, Mary, but selling
noise as art has been tried - and usually unsuccessfully.
