5.0 out of 5 stars Great jigsaw puzzle book, November 23, 2008
By
I've been playing with this book with my 2.5 year old son, who is really into puzzles even though he can't do them alone yet. The book is beautiful, fun, and educational. The puzzles generally have a very easily identified part of a dragon or a little animal on each piece, so my son can recognize where the piece goes, although he can't consistently orient them or put them in. We've had it a couple of months, but the pieces are sturdy thin cardboard. I think they should last a long time. He isn't interested in the stories on the facing page yet, but they're cute pseudo-factual information about dragon mythology, including the story of the dragon of Wales and a page on Eastern dragons.

One potential drawback of jigsaw puzzle books is that you can mix up the pieces. A few of the puzzles in this book have similar color schemes. I can tell the pieces apart quite easily, but my son can't. We've instituted a "do this puzzle before you turn the page rule," but of course it doesn't always happen. Then I have to sort out the pieces before we can continue the book.

One thing that makes this book stand out is each page has a theme-related shaped piece (a crown, an egg, a moon, etc). My son always wants to put these in last and gets very excited when it's time for the last piece. Also, the puzzles are highlighted in gilt parts: stars, moon, etc, which makes the end result very pretty.

Overall, a good buy, and an especially portable source of a lot of fun puzzling (though it wouldn't work as a car/airplane toy, it would be ideal for a hotel stay).
