Forever a family favorite!,
This review is from: Dragon's Merry Christmas (Paperback)
This is the first and only Dragon book we've read. My son, who was 3 years old at the time, committed to memory the entire book and loved to "read" it to anyone who'd listen during the holiday season and beyond! We all just cracked up about Dragon's Candy Wreath! This book is a heck of a lot of fun and really captures the holiday spirit of giving, harming none and the temptations of over-indulgence. It's great for all ages -- but best if you can find a 3 year old to read it to...and have them read it back to you!

This warm, funny Christmas book is a joy for all adults and children. It captures the fun and heartwarming aspects of the season as Dragon find the true spirit of Christmas-giving to others. A must read for children of all ages. My favorite of Pilkey's Dragon series.

Delightful easy reader,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dragon's Merry Christmas: Dragon's Third Tale (Hardcover)
Lovable, kind, and exuberantly childlike, Dragon celebrates Christmas in four self-contained stories presented as chapters. The delightful stories range in tone from the hilarious, such as when Dragon can't help but eat the chocolate candy wreath he's made as a decoration, to the heartwarming, as when he shares his food and clothes with those in greater need, and later "dream [s] he heard angels singing in the starry night" when those he has befriended sing him carols. Brightly colored, the illustrations are joyful and expressive. It's hard to imagine an easy reader getting much better than this.

Delightful dragon story,

This review is from: Dragon's Merry Christmas (Library Binding)
This book contains four short stories about a young dragon and his adventures at Christmas time. In the first story, The Perfect Christmas Tree, dragon goes in hunt for a perfect Christmas tree, but when he finally finds it, he doesn't have the heart to cut it down, so he decorates it where it stands. In the second story, The Candy Wreath, dragon makes a wreath out of candy, and finds he can't control himself in the presence of so much sweetness, so he eats himself sick. In the third story, Mittens, dragon begins to clip his mittens to his coat sleeves so that he won't lose them, but he still ends up losing them. And in the final story, Merry Christmas, Dragon, dragon discovers for himself the joy of giving. The stories are quite amusing for young and old alike, and not at all scary. It's a great Christmas book, all in all. It contains about 850 words, and can easily be read at one sitting or in small chunks.

My 7.5 year old daughter loved this book. She was glad to have a Chapter book that was about Christmas. I agree with the other reviewer who said the best part is when Dragon makes a wreath out of candy but ends up eating the whole wreath. My daughter was laughing out loud.

Adorable and joyful!,
This review is from: Dragon's Merry Christmas (Paperback)
I might have been tempted to give this book 4 1/2 stars, simply because there wasn't as much of a thread running through the chapters as I would have liked - but, it was so gosh darn cute that I didn't really care! (Okay, and I was thinking it was a dinosaur, for some reason, instead of a dragon, but that's really minor ;> )I completely enjoyed this adorable story about a sweet dragon preparing for Christmas. If the last page/illustration does just warm your heart, I'm not sure what will. :) A very easy reader broken into "chapters," our Dragon goes through various events which demonstrate: the beauty of living things, the side-effects of greed, the issues with forgetfulness, and the joy of sharing. These "messages" all done in a funny or sweet way and are quite subtle and simply unfold with the story. The illustrations are delightful and perfectly complementary to the text! I definitely give this a huge recommendation!! :D

I have other titles in Dav Pilkey's "Dragon" series and have loved them all. This one is no disappointment. Dragon's daft but sweet nature shines through. Although this story is secular, Dragon's selfless generosity is very Christ-like. Definitely a Christmas story worth reading to your kids again and again.

Simple but sensational storytelling!,

This review is from: Dragon's Merry Christmas (Paperback)
Dragon's Merry Christmas will be loved by young readers in your family circle. The stories show the sensitivity of Dragon, and his feelings of the Christmas spirit. He finds the perfect Christmas tree, but can't bring himself to chop it down and bring it to his own house. He decorates it right where it grows! Overwhelmed by the sweetness of a candy wreath, Dragon eats and eats! But it is Dragon's discovering the joy of giving -- the meaning of Christmas -- that makes this book so perfect. The imaginative illustrations add to the quality of the book. |
