2.0 out of 5 stars Sunset Warrior fans--turn back!, October 29, 1999
Every time I read the original Sunset Warrior volume, I get a vision not unlike the movie Logan's Run in my head. I think I've read it 7 times now. I admire it for its simplicity, and it was easy to identify with the character. The plot was maybe two-dimensional at best, but hey--what do you want from a story that takes place completely underground? Lustbader really did a masterpiece with that one, and the following two books pretty well kept up the spirit. But if you're expecting more of the same from this newest book, forget it. It might as well have been written by a completely different author with totally new characters. Of course, you can't blame Lustbader entirely. Authors change over 20 years of writing. He should have left the Sunset series rest, though, because his new style is far too thick for my tastes. It's all I can do to get past the foreign words and all the adjectives. It was much like the success of Orson Scott Card's simplistic masterpiece, Ender's Game, which mutated into Xenocide--an unreadable book. Go back and read Sunset Warrior again! Save your 19 bucks!

2.0 out of 5 stars The Sun definately Set on this Warrior., January 31, 2000
As a huge fan of the original 3 Sunset Warrior books, I was excited about the possibility of yet another great installment in the series. I was sadly disappointed. In reading the back of the book you get the sense that this is indeed a book about the Dai-san, The Sunset Warrior. Really this is a book about Moichi, his bond brother with just enough of a sprinkling of the Dai-san to justify putting his name on it. While Moichi is a good character in his own right, the book doesn't live up the great standards that Lustbader set in his first three. The plot is convoluted and almost directionless. The uniqueness of his first books is lost here in a meandering tale that rockets along in an attempt to outrun it's own lackluster storyline. I found myself putting the book down in favor of others, and even had difficulty seeing it through to the end. Stick with the "original" Suset Warrior trilogy; they will always live up to their name.
