Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 1^-2. In this cheerful fantasy from the Step into Reading Plus Math series, a dragon takes over the bridge that leads to a town's beloved berry fields. A clever girl challenges the beast to a test of wits using balancing scales. Answering questions such as "Which weighs more, one apple or two peas?" and "Which weighs more, a little bag of gold or a big bag of cotton?" the child wins the contest. She promises to share the berries, and the creature becomes the town "watchdragon." Weaving mathematical ideas into the story, this book will challenge beginning readers in two directions at once, while allowing them to feel superior to the not-so-villainous dragon. Lively, colorful, and sometimes comical, the artwork gives the book an appealing look. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Teaching The Concept Of Weight!, June 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dragon's Scales (Step-Into-Reading, Step 3) (Paperback)
With a great ending this book will help to teach kids about weight and entertain them too. Vivid, colorful illustrations and a well-paced story make this a must for primary elementary classrooms! Another great Step into Reading PLUS MATH!

4.0 out of 5 stars We love this book, August 12, 2008
This review is from: The Dragon's Scales (Step-Into-Reading, Step 3) (Paperback)
The reason I didn't give this book five stars, is because I feel that if a child is old enough to read, the "math" would be too simplistic. For my four year old, it was great. I found it a clever way to introduce the concept of size and weight in an engaging story, (a bigger thing can be lighter, more can be lighter than less, etc). It is a cute book and worth having, but I just don't get, what I perceive to be, a mismatch of ability levels presented. By the time my child is reading, I'd hope for more difficult subject matter.

The "scales" is a play on words. These are weight scales.
In this story they are used to teach about weights
My 4 year old learned a lot from the weighing contest.
Two items don't necessarily weigh more than one.
Large size doesn't mean it's heavier.
In the end the dragon (who had owned the scales but apparently never used them before this contest) learns the lessons.
Nice story and interesting lesson for young ones.
