I just finished reading "Dragons of the Valley" by Donita K. Paul. This is the first book I've ever read by Paul and it was truly enjoyable! I picked this book because it is a Christian Fantasy Fiction, and I thought it was time I chose something fun that I could pass on to the kids. At least I hoped I could pass it on to the kids. I wasn't disappointed.

The book is set in the fictional land of Chiril on a different planet. The people of Chiril are peace-loving, however they have (for the most part) no knowledge of the Creator. War threatens their peaceful country and the struggles that the heroes face to embrace the call to defend their country are just as important as the struggles they face to trust and embrace their Creator (given the name 'Wulder'). As we discover the characters in the story, we discover Wulder along with them.

This is book 2 in a new series. It follows on the heels of The Vanishing Sculptor, which I hope to purchase for my kids to read first (so they don't get lost trying to figure out the story). The book cover has a tagline at the top that says "A Fantastic Journey of Discovery for All Ages." I have to agree. I have been struggling to find ideas for encouraging my 13 yo, 11 yo, and 9 yo to practice reading aloud. Knowing their love for all things fantasy (magic, dragons, new creatures, etc), I know they will be easily drawn into this series. What I love so much about it, is how much it reveals about our Creator. Paul does an excellent job of revealing the attributes of God through the pages of this fiction book. I explored all over again, through the eyes of characters who were discovering Him for the first time, God's faithfulness, His sovereignty, His omniscience, His omnipresence, His love, and His concern.

Dragons of the Valley begins and ends with bursting excitement. Even without The Vanishing Sculptor as a prior guide, the story stands solidly on its on merit. Paul succeeds where so many have failed before her. The middle book in her Chiril series pulsates with enthusiasm and energy, avoiding the sophomore slump many authors embrace unintentionally. Valley delivers subtle undertones of Spiritual instruction, guaranteed to please both the devoted follower of Christ as well as the non-believer in need of His Word. This book is a must read for any and every fan of fantasy fiction. Without giving too much of the story away, the adventure centers again on Tipper, Bealomondore, and Prince Jayrus and their adventures in the realm of Chiril. Together, they must join with the dragons of the valley to overcome the ultimate test. On that note, stop reading this review and pick up a copy of this incredible journey of discovery for all ages and read it now!

Normally, I would advise people *against* reading a book in the middle of a series. All sorts of problems may arise. The least of which is that (unless said series is extraordinarily popular) the reader will often have little idea about the overall plot, characters, locations, or events in the story. I requested a book for review that I did not realize was the middle book of a trilogy. I started to read *Dragons of the Valley*, by Donita K. Paul, anyway, and proceeded to become thoroughly and completely confused.

The species in the story, the events, the "magic" elements, the characters, and so forth were genuinely puzzling. Eventually, I grew frustrated, and was about to rate the book badly for not even taking the time to describe the essentials for new readers. That is, after all, the basic job of an author in a series. Then, I dropped the book and picked it up. Somehow, my hand thumbed the last pages open, and I discovered an index of all the main species, characters, and facts in the story. I had to shamefully admit that I should have examined the book BEFORE my frustrations began to mount. *Blush*

To avoid giving away too many spoilers, a very brief sketch of the story will be given. The world is divided into a number of realms. The realm of our heroes, Chiril, is in the throes of a conspiracy to destroy it. The land's fate is tied to a trio of statues that the Deity Wulder (based on the Chrstian God) ordered the wizard-artist Verrin Schope to create. The statues had to be separated in order to protect them from being destroyed by the foreign power that is slowly sowing dissent and killing officials in preparation of an invasion of the realm.

Format: Paperback
Chiril is a peaceful prosperous land. However the tranquility ends when an army invades the country. Tipper Schope must hide three statues because if the enemy gets it will mean the end of her nation as she knows it. She enlists her Bealomondore the artist to help her with her quest. He understands he must wield a sword like he did a brush.

At the same time that the terrible foe marches into Chiril, a horrific beast is stalking and killing anyone in its path. No one is safe from the predatory Grawl. Time is running out for the two heroes and their companions as they struggle to reach the Valley of the Dragons where they plan to leave the statues.

The latest inspiration dragon fantasy (see Dragonknight and Dragonquest) is a fabulous tale that, as always in a Donita K. Paul thriller, takes the audience soaring across the author's vivid mythical landscape. As chaos threatens the land, Tipper and Bealomondore are heroic figures; not because they may succeed, but due to risking their lives against overwhelming odds as for instance a peace loving artist picks up the sword. Action-packed with deadly perils from outside coming in and inside expanding out and with a strong cast especially the champions, fans will need a seat belt as this fast-paced novel never takes a respite.
