Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The prequel to Radon Labs' award-winning RPG, Drakensang: The River of Time introduces a brand new story within the Drakensang universe. The new story brings many innovations and new game elements for experienced as well for first time players, who will jump right into the fascinating medieval fantasy RPG scenario of Drakensang: The River Of Time.

  • Two new classes of heroes: the Geodes (rare Aventurian druids of the dwarfs) and the Gjalskerland inhabitants (tenacious and hard barbarians).
  • Living on a ship, players will experience a broad variety of RPG quests. There will be two new character archetypes to play, tons of new foes and monsters as well as equipment items.
  • Advanced expert mode and adjustable levels of difficulty.
  • The story will contain more twists than in Drakensang: With every place the player visits, his view on things will change. Depending on the choice of character, and behavior, new opportunities and series of quests will come up.

  • System Requirements

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great game, even without a manual January 28, 2011
    Verified Purchase
I recently played the previous version of Drakensang (The Dark Eye) to the end and am well acquainted with the game interface. This game is very similar to Dark Eye, but not quite. I can't figure out how to select a character who isn't a warrior, and THIS GAME CAME WITHOUT A MANUAL that would help out.

I've just started River of Time. Graphics are much nicer than Dark Eye, but otherwise it's too early to tell. Online reviews elsewhere on the web say River of Time has been out for over a year in several European versions, so most of the bugs are gone. The game was universally highly rated (8-9 out of 10), and that seems right.

    UPDATES 1/30/11 and 2/12/11:
I've completed the first few areas and imagine I'm about 50-60% of the way through. So far I love the game. Half of playing it is figuring out the user interface.

Mostly the mechanics of River of Time (RoT) work just like Drakensang The Dark Eye (TDE). You can readily find a downloadable TDE manual online, and if you're struggling, read up on FAQs and hints for TDE. Because both games are based on "The Dark Eye" tabletop RPG, it has markedly different rules from the D&D-like games we usually play. I found it helpful to review some of the online summaries of the paper-and-pencil game. The German site has lots of nice information about both games. It's not hard to find the English-language sections. There's a detailed FAQ about the mechanics of the tabletop game and how it compares with the Drakensang computer games at [...].

Here are a few of the differences between TDE and the usual D&D approach:

    1. There are no "super-weapons" or spells that kill everything. Your character will always be weaker than many of the enemies you face.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A great value! February 9, 2011

Loved "Drakensang: The River of Time" as it was easy on system resources, stable with Windows 7 x64, and had a great story. I was able to run background tasks and switch from the game back to Windows with ease. My computer is 3 years old yet I ran this with max settings in 1920x1050 resolution with no problem and it was beautiful. Game mechanics were very good. The voice acting was also good, though the lip movements rarely matched the dialogue (probably because it was originally a German game). For this price you can't go wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it March 20, 2011
I played the first one and got quickly bored. I stopped playing at a rat level(I think) things bum rushed my team one time too many.

River of Time looks better, feels better and plays better than its predecessor. I loved it. It's a challenging game in that it require you to think things over before you do them, you actually have to use tactics in a fight, even against low level monsters, because they can overwhelm you if you don't pay attention. It's a game in which you cannot go in sword swinging, shooting arrows from the hip and expect to get far.

The story is a nice one. The characters are lovely and colorful. There is a lot of battles, and it doesn't get tedious or impossible like the first one. Thinking things trough will eventually get you out.

This game runs flawlessly on my system, it doesn't require a heavy load on the processor, however with all games you need a decent GPU (midrange is good enough) to be able to play it in the highest detail.

For $19.99 it's a steal. I can recommend it to anyone that likes RPG and loves a challenge.

If you like D&D rpg games like neverwinter nights or dragon age, you'll like this. Buy this (DRM free) download version over the Steam version since they are the same price. The game itself is 4 stars, but it is 5 stars at this price.

Graphics: the game is surprisingly well-polished, with small details like ships sailing in the background and cats walking around the towns. Very pretty. The scenery is lush vegetation with beautiful lighting, but the game is optimized and runs smoothly compared to its peers. Runs fine on windows 7.

Character customization: There are about 20 presets in each gender but face customization is not possible. You can play as a male dwarf, male/female elf, and male/female humans of various nationalities.

Gameplay: Party-based combat. You have control of companion leveling up/point allocation. You cannot set automatic tactics, so micro-managing all companions (pausing after each round to issue orders) is necessary. You cannot just control your main character and breeze through the entire game. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THIS, DON'T BUY THIS GAME! Fights are genuinely challenging if you are unprepared, or do not utilize all your companions effectively.

There is a good deal of choice in combat style (ex: Disregarding what I said above, you can roleplay a druid and use calming spells on wild animals, avoiding 80% of the fights in the game. Since most XP comes from quests, you will still do fine). There is a robust crafting/alchemy mechanic in the game as well.

Modding: Haven't found many mods. The save game info is stored in a SQL database, so save game editors are easily available online. They should be used to increase the molasses-slow movement speeds.
