It's On!,

This review is from: Drama High: The Fight (Mass Market Paperback)
Sixteen-year old Compton native Jayd Jackson attends the predominately white South Bay High school. As with most high schools, the campus is crawling with cliques, catty girls and young guys with raging hormones. Jayd is anticipating a drama-free school year, but finds she is in the midst of the drama with her relationship with her boyfriend, KJ. She discovers he is seeing other girls because he is not pleased with her decision not to go all the way with him. As a result, she finds herself being an unwilling opponent in a fight.
DRAMA HIGH: The Fight is L. Divine's first novel in the Drama High series. Filled with all the elements that make for a good book - young love, non-stop drama and a taste of the supernatural, it is sure to please. The author has a refreshing voice that young readers as well as adults can relate to. I read this book simultaneously with my teenage daughter, and although she said that is not the way teens talk, she enjoyed the book as much as I did. This novel comes highly recommended, and I look forward to the additional books in the series. Reviewed by Paula Henderson of The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

captivating look at teen life,
This review is from: Drama High: The Fight (Mass Market Paperback)
In Compton, California South Bay High School basketball star Kalvince Alonzo Jenkins, Jr., KJ for short, tells his girlfriend Jayd Jackson that they are through as he is making it with someone else willing to go all the way with him. She is upset, but with her close friends Nellie and Mickey at her side, she moves on past the disappointment of her love life being shattered.
After working all summer at Simply Wholesome, Jayd returns to school hoping this year will be quieter and not another sentence at "Drama High", where she knows being an outsider bussed in means the locals assume she will steal from them. However, her former best friend Misty still has in for her and persuades KJ's current squeeze Trecee into challenging Jayd to a cat fight. Though uninterested in a fight or KJ, as she has found student Jeremy more fascinating and kinder than her ex though he is white, Jayd knows she has no choice if she is to attend school with her head held high by defending her honor. This is a captivating look at teen life at a middle class predominately white high school in which the star of the tale, Jayd, is bussed in along with about thirty other black students. Her insight into the drama of surviving high school is terrific as rivalries are the norm. Readers will appreciate the first Drama High tale starring a strong support cast and a heroine who just wants a quiet school year and wonders if that is asking too much? Harriet Klausner

Not My Thing,
By Noelle "Noellewashere" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Drama High: The Fight (Mass Market Paperback)
I wasn't very excited when I received The Fight as a gift but i gave it the benefit of the doubt. It turned out to be a waste of my time. Not only was it poorly written but it was one word: ghetto. Why would anyone want to read about someone getting shot in detail in the first 50 pages of a book? There's enough violence in the world (and enough negative sterotypes about African American people) that when I read a book it's to escape the bad things around me, not to read about them.
Though I didnt like the book as a whole, there were a few things I thought were nice about the book such as the Jayd Jackson's (the main character) new love interest. I also thought her grandmother was super cool and I wouldn't mind meeting her in real life. All in all I rate this book a 3.5.

Magically Enchanting,
This review is from: Drama High: The Fight (Mass Market Paperback)
Now, here's a book that really tells what is goin on in High School!!! Honestly, if a boy gonna do you like that, kick him to the curb let him drool over all the other girls he wants 'cause he ain't worth it. But anyway the magical potions and stuff was a lil wierd but the story really got into what goes in in between the walls of any highschool!!!

Kept Attention,
By
This review is from: Drama High: The Fight (Mass Market Paperback)
My 15 year old daughter who loves to read, read this book in one day. She said that it kept her attention and she did not want to put it down until she finished. She is begging me to purchase the others in the series, which I will. I love being able to provide her with books about african american teenagers, such as she, and I especially love it when she says the books met her expectations and was a good book.

Makes Me Wanna Holler,

Jayd Jackson is a `rebel with a mouth,' street smart, book smart and wise about the games guys play. Jayd is still a typical girl and she fell for one of the cutest, more popular guys at South Bay High. KJ was the nicest, most considerate boyfriends a girl could want. That is until it came time for the cookie distribution. Translation, Jayd wasn't ready for sex so Mr. Considerate moved on to the next chick.
It's the first week of school and drama seems to be lurking all around Jayd as she tries to deal with her classes, her family and her first broken heart. It would be simpler if she knew precisely who was and wasn't her friend. Misty has been posing as a friend for far too long and now that Trecee is in Jayd's face about KJ, her ex, she knows that some type of way Misty is caught in the middle, but how, she isn't certain. Drama High: The Fight was initially purchased for my younger cousin. I usually pre-read anything I'm considering for her because of the content some authors deem age appropriate. Though I believe that this is some mess that high schoolers unfortunately are locked into, I have to say that the whole potions and cleansings were too much for me. Even with all of that, I think Drama High: The Fight truly reps what high school is like.

"Drama High: The Fight is entertaining and reflective of life as a teenager. Packed with all the hype one can expect to experience in high school. From rumors, misunderstandings, lies, break ups, crushes and fights."
"Jayd Jackson is the typical teenager about to return to high school after summer break, amid some drama centered on her ex-boyfriend KJ. With the help of her friends, Nellie and Mickey she overcomes her disappointment with the break up and eventually becomes interested in Jeremy, another classmate at South Bay High." "News of an impending fight between Jayd and Tracee are surfacing around campus. Untruths and hidden agendas are exposed causing a fight which ends in suspension and expulsion." "L. Divine has tapped into an interesting genre for teen readers."

I AM SO MAD ABOUT THIS BOOK. THE TITLE DREW ME TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK AND THERE WAS NO DRAMA LIKE I WANTED. THERE WAS MORE RITUALS THAN ANYTHING. IN HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA WAS MORE INTENSE THAN WHAT I READ. IT WAS NOT TO HOT TO ME.
