5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever., January 30, 2004

These guys do not sound like lifehouse or any other band out there. ESPECIALLY when you see them live... Paco Estrada is the singer forementioned in other reviews. He alone makes this band truly what it is. A big guy who can put a feeling into his tone. The guitar duo is flawless and the viola is topnotch. Definitly a must buy in my opinion. But seeing them live in Deep Ellum (where they normally play) is a whole new world of good music...

And I agree with the previous comment "Dear Claudia" is one of the weaker songs on the album...

5.0 out of 5 stars suprise! good modern rock is back, June 30, 2003

I'm normally not into this style of rock (i listen to much heavier stuff), but right off the bat the first track "Thursday Night" caught my ear. They've got some really thick guitars that can get heavy, but the real emotional pull is from the vocals. The singer has a real control over his emotions portrayed in his voice. Its like a soothing cry for help.
I've been hearing them on the radio lately with that song Dear Claudia - take it or leave it - i think its one of the weakest songs on the record, but i'm sure other people would love it. it is catchy, thats for sure, but i like the rest of the album so much more. If you get a chance to listen to "Drama Kids" before you buy it, make sure you check out the last 3 tracks - those are my favorites. Theres this one that has this wierd little groove, almost like a waltz or something. its suprising that it works so well as a melodic rock song.
overall, SouthFM is one of the most promising modern rock bands i've heard in a long time. they have a lot of versatility and depth. and they write great songs - rather than just a great chorus, the whole song is really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Texas band rocks hard, and hits soft, June 5, 2003

When you first hear the single, "Dear Claudia," you assume that SouthFM is one of those LIFEHOUSE, CALLING, CREED type bands. Not to say that "Dear Claudia" isn't as good, if not better than any of those aforementioned band's hits. However, the meat of the matter is the rest of the band's debut album which conjures up Tool, A Perfect Circle and bands of that ilk, all with far more substance than the occasional hit single.

I love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars the drama kids are talented, June 4, 2003

Drawing on hard-driving guitar riffs and empowering vocals, SouthFM puts forth a solid debut with "Drama Kids." The Dallas based quintet utilizes dual guitar work and intense dynamics to offer a progressive and intense sound that can be categorized as brooding alternative rock. SouthFM's vocalist Paco Estrada effectively captures a multitude of compelling, angst-ridden emotion, drawing comparisons to Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, especially on tracks like "Thursday Night" and "Eve". Obviously a talented band, I'd recommend it to rock fans of all molds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut CD, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Drama Kids (Audio CD)
I currently live in San Jose, but am originally from the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. I was visiting my family in Dallas the week of July 1st and on Friday, July 6, my daughter took me to the Liquid Lounge to see "Paco Estrada." She said she had seen him a few times and he was really good. When he finally came on stage around midnight, it was just him, his guitar, a violinist and a percussionist who looked like a cross between Boy George and Alice Cooper. Anyway, Paco put on a very good show and I was quite impressed. I later learned he was up until last year, a member of the band SouthFM. When I got back to San Jose, I went to Rasputin Music and bought both CD's. I have not had a chance yet to listen to the other one, but "Drama Kids" is a really good CD. All of the lyrics are penned my Mr. Estrada and very good lyrics they are. I especially liked "Dear Claudia" and "Thursday Night." Really great stuff. Too bad they disbanded in October of 2006.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Opinion, July 2, 2003
This review is from: Drama Kids (Audio CD)
The first reviews on here say that SouthFM is almost nothing like Lifehouse when it comes to music. This is partially true. The sound is a bit deeper. But that's basically all. The vocals are close, and with what I previously said in context, the sound is similar as well. But the cd is still great. Not to insult anybody, but this doesn't not sound a lot like Tool, or A Perfect Circle (both of which are excellant bands). The single (Dear Claudia) sounds close to most of the songs, but each has it's own personal 'flavor'. You should check this one out, if for no other reason, just to hear something new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bringing on the drama, June 13, 2003

The first single "Dear Claudia" is just the beginning for SouthFM. Listen to the rest of the album and you'll know why SouthFM is a contender in the alternative rock arena. Their sound may be compared to the likes of Lifehouse and the Calling, but SouthFM has the edge that leaves their contenders in the dust. Listen to "Luis" and you'll see what puts SouthFM at a cut above the rest. I don't think there's anyone else who could rock the viola like that. This album is definitely one to add to your collection.
