Book Description

December 1992 0773498974 978-0773498976
This study introduces a general theory of dramatic form, together with a detailed, practicable method for the analysis and critical understanding of plays and screenplays. The author proposes that any play or screenplay can ultimately be understood as conforming to one of just seven dynamic types, and that knowledge of the kinetic and modal signatures of these skeletal "plots" provides the key for decoding the metaphorical significance of a drama's action and imagery. Examples range from ancient Greek drama to modern opera libretti to contemporary film, and from acknowledged dramatic masterpieces to more popular works.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Completely New View of How Drama Works, June 25, 2005

This review is from: Dramatic Structure and Meaning in Theatrical Productions (Hardcover)
This book offers a well-argued general theory of how plays and screenplays work, and what they mean. The theory is based on the assumption that dramatic fantasies are binary and dialectical in nature, and that the two sides of the dramatic collision represent the dominant and recessive voices of the author's mind at the time of writing. The first part of the work is densely written but rewards careful reading with an an revolutionary new way of looking at dramatic structure and meaning. The second part is easier sailing and shows in detail how all dramas fit into just seven dynamic patterns, one of which will lead us to the dialectical meaning of any drama we care to submit to this interesting and fruitful method of analysis.
