Editorial Reviews

Review

“Aaron Draplin is sort of like the Bernie Sanders of graphic design. . . . Now the designer is dropping a book called Pretty Much Everything (out May 17), and according to the official announcement it’s going to be a ‘mid-career survey of work, case studies, inspiration, road stories, lists, covers, and logos.’ Chances are it’s probably going to be pretty damn funny, too.”

Another awesome design book to add to your collection.

Funny, philosophical, and down to earth. I only wish that more designers would put out material like this. This book is packed with quality behind the scenes photos, commentary, and the work itself.

I look forward to more to come from the DDC.

The only slight I have against this product has nothing to do with the product itself, but the way it is shipped. I received my hardcover book, naked, entombed in a cardboard slipcase. Due to the weight of the book itself, the corners were badly damaged during shipping / handling. It is a disappointing blemish on an otherwise high quality piece of work.

Amazon, you are doing this book a disservice.

As one of Aaron's oldest friends, I've watched him build his graphic design empire over the past 25 years. He is, by far, one of the hardest working graphic designers on the planet. His talent is second-to-none and this "mid-career" book has in it more proof of that than entire volumes of Saul Bass or Massimo Vignelli work.

One time when we were both 17 years old, Aaron turned to me and said, "Cam, watch this" and he proceeded to draw something with both of his hands, a pencil in each hand. The left hand's version of the drawing was an exact mirror of the right hand's version. This was no mere parlor trick. This was a naturally talented artist who had mastered the skills of his trade at a very young age. I saw it early in his career and have followed him ever since.

Aaron's "Pretty Much Everything" book is a masterpiece of graphic design output, cataloguing the career of one of the greatest designers of the past 50 years.

I could have written this review before I received the book. I knew it was going to be awesome and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. What I like most about Aaron (aside from his work) is his down to earth nature. He's just a dude making awesome stuff. Not pretentious at all. Get to know him through this book. You won't be disappointed.

So far I have read most of the book...incredible imagery. Love the attention to detail that he took crafting each page. Long story short...if you are a designer looking for inspiration from a hell of a guy and an incredible artist, BUY THIS BOOK.

Oh and BTW If you've never seen him speak, definitely put that on your bucket list.

This is an absolutely stunning book. A true visual feast. The cover is gorgeous too- reminiscent of the school textbooks of my childhood with debossed details. The interior spreads are chock full of logos and design projects- and delightful to look at. BTW, Draplin's design work is damn great too.

Aaron Draplin is such a inspiration to me and it is so awesome seeing his work and progression throughout the years and the little tips he gives everyone throughout the book. As another reviewer said, I really can't believe this is only $24.00, the printing is fantastic, the layout is fantastic, everything is beautiful. Thank you Aaron Draplin for making this affordable for a struggling designers like me.

Anyways, if you are a serious designer or love design, get this book you will not regret it, it is seriously worth every penny! :)

I just received Pretty Much Everything today (release day), and I'm already obsessing over every detail. Thousands and thousands of pieces of inspiration; from logos to products to sketches to stories and more. The book quality itself is gorgeous. If you're a fan of Aaron Draplin's work, you're gonna love this thing. Thanks Aaron - you can tell what a labor of love this was!

Wow. I've been a fan of Draplin for awhile now (if you haven't seen one of his talks, just do a Youtube search. This guy is a master), so I knew this book would be good. I pre-ordered it the day I heard about it, and have anxiously awaited its arrival ever since. When the package came, I tore it open the second I walked in the door.

All I can say is that Draplin has done it again. I feel like I got away with robbery by only paying $24 for this book. It's jam-packed full of good design, beautiful photography, and classic Draplin philosophy. I want to say that this will be proudly displayed on my shelf for decades to come, but I know that's a lie, because it'll never make it to the shelf - it's going to be on my desk, used day in and day out as a reference and a source of kick-in-the-pants inspiration.

Thanks, Draplin. Keep this stuff coming.

In a word, fantastic. I can't remember the last time I picked up a book and was immediately inspired to create and go do something great. I've had this book in my hands for less than 24 hours and I can't wait to get working on all sorts of projects.

Authentic is a buzzword and marketing term nowadays that doesn't mean anything for the most part but everything about Aaron's book, his writing, and his work screams authenticity. From his tell-it-like-it-is attitude to the gorgeous photos of relics gone by. The book is part memoir, part portfolio, part advice and all cool. In the book he recounts his journey from childhood to now through family memories, crappy jobs, road trips, art school, paid gigs, unpaid gigs and everything in between.

You could get lost for hours just looking at the pages and pages of logos, collectables and print layouts. I haven't seen a collection like this anywhere, and to think it all came from one guy is mind blowing. The color is beautiful, the debossed hardback cover is fun to hold, and I can't wait to read through this over and over again to see what I've missed.

I'm a designer and recently published author as well, so I know the amount of sweat, blood, and tears Aaron and others put into this. I'm blown away and challenged to be so much better. If you appreciate design or a true American story at all, you'll be richer for picking up this book.

I can't wait to see volume 2.
