This book is just what I needed! It has fairly simple stepswhich create great results in only a few minutes. I borrowed thisbook from a friend and I was drawing grrreat tigers before I had to give it back. Now all I have to do is buy it! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars A Poor Teaching Tool
I ordered this book because I want to learn to draw cats. Well, not just cats, but MY cat. He is such a character! How can I render his "I am invisible now" stance? Or his, "Get out of my chair" glare?

This book teaches by using sketches, only. There is no written content. In addition, the sketches are somewhat accomplished, which may be a drawback...

I wanted to draw more realistic cats
and this book showed me that I needed to start with the head shape
and not the ears. There was not a lot of writing, just good step-by-step instruction. From my first drawing with this book, my drawings have improved. I highly reccomend this book!

This is the best drawing book I have gotten to date. It gives detailed instruction. Almost immediatley I was able to draw realistic looking cats. Using the techniques in the book I was able to expand and draw other animals as well.

I am teaching my students to draw cats using this book. I like the step-by-step drawings and the different position and types of cats.
We have gone one step further in class by making our own stationery and cards using our finished drawings. We add a complimentary quote to our drawing from the book 516 Sensational Cat Quotes, Proverbs, Quips and Jokes for Scrapbooking, Crafting and Fun ISBN 0966640578
Teachers, have your student make a copy of the original so that they can make numerous copies. Save the originals.
Great drawing book. I highly recommend it.
We are having fun in class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Copy Cat, December 22, 2008
This review is from: Draw 50 Cats: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Domestic Breeds, Wild Cats, Cuddly Kittens, and Famous Felines (Paperback)
Lee Ames has produced a series of "Draw 50..." about various animals, which all seem very good. I have chosen to start with the cat book, and plan to use the ones about dogs and horses next.

About the layout of the book: Each page covers one of the 50 cats. Ames presents eight steps on each cat/page, from the first sketchy outlines to the finished cat. The first step is just a few lines (about five) lines and shapes, indicating general forms, so that it is easy to copy this and to move along to each subsequent step. Personally I find it easier to use a method of "blocking in" the larger shapes (like a circle for the body, other large shapes, etc) and then moving on to refine the form. I advise that you refer to the finished drawing as you work through the steps, particularly with this method. This should help you get the proportions right and understand how each step relates to the animal as a whole and to stay on target.

About the cats: the 50 cats are nicely balanced with examples from 18 breeds, in various poses; five types of head shots; eight types of wild cats, five "famous cats", including Morris and Felix; six fun poses of kittens; 12 behaviors and emotions, ending with a sleeping cat: Good Night! The book lacks a table of contents, so I have counted these for you.

The complexity is easy to moderate, though it would be best to have AT LEAST a rudimentary knowledge and skill about drawing. (For those who have no experience or "talent", or think that they don't, I highly recommend Ed Emberley's books, such as his "Drawing Book of Animals": cute, easy and fun, fun, fun!) I like the fact that the cat drawings in Lee Ames' book can be completed in a few minutes, since I only have small stretches of time for my drawing hobby.

Most art hobbyists can have success copying the various cats in Lee Ames' book. All of the exercises in the book are basically "contour drawing" from graphics (from a drawing, not from a photo or from real life). Because there is no real shading, perspective, light sources, etc, the drawings look rather flat, without depth. The student can move on to value studies (dark and light), light effects, texture, shape, and so on, to create more depth and realism in drawing.

In sum, this book is fun and a good starting point to depicting cats in a way that can bring success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch series, January 29, 2008
This review is from: Draw 50 Cats: The Step-by-Step Way to Draw Domestic Breeds, Wild Cats, Cuddly Kittens, and Famous Felines (Paperback)
I have a very artistic child and another child who isn't quite as artistic. Both love this book and others from the "Draw 50" series. The one has a blast changing little things and making the pictures his own and the other has fun realizing that she too can create some cool pictures with the easy to follow instructions. This particular book has some wonderful cats featured from your common tabby to more unique household cats and large wild kitties. It's definitely worth the money.

this is the kind of book that can make a big difference in a child's (or an adult's) attitude towards drawing. many are intimidated by the obvious talents and abilities of professional artists and hesitate to try for fear of failing to come close to those results. this book, and those like it, illustrate how wonderful results can be achieved by learning simple, step by step methods. i have bought a number of these books and highly recommend them to any child, parent or grandparent.

I ordered this book because I want to learn to draw cats. Well, not just cats, but MY cat. He is such a character! How can I render his "I am invisible now" stance? Or his, "Get out of my chair" glare?

This book teaches by using sketches, only. There is no written content. In addition, the sketches are somewhat accomplished, which may be a drawback that makes written instruction necessary, in my opinion. Hence, the "Step-by Step" title is misleading. Simplification is important to the process of drawing. This book does not provide that.
