As you work, it's a good idea, from time to time, to hold a mirror to your sketch. The image in the mirror frequently shows distortion you might not recognize otherwise.
In the book you will notice that the new step additions (in color) are printed darker so they can be clearly identified. But be sure to keep all of your construction steps very lighty. Here's where the kneaded eraser can be useful. You can lighten a pencil stroke that is too dark by pressing on it with the eraser.

This was the most useful book for learning to draw birds that I have found to date. It was easy to follow, the drawings were accurate without being overly ornate, and the diversity of birds was perfect. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn to draw, and especially for those who want to draw birds.

My child loves to draw, even though admittedly is not yet very good at it. This book has shown the way to better drawing skills in a step-by-step way. There is nothing "cartoon-ish" about the drawings, as they are realistic portayals, which is what my child is striving for. Not too difficult though, for a younger child either. My 8-year-old absolutely loves all the books in this series. They don't involve much reading at all. Each pictures shows many steps from beginning to end, not just a few.

This is a good basic drawing book. I was looking for something a little more detailed but this book is good at helping lay the foundations.

My talented 7 year old niece has had it about a year and really enjoyed it. She has made excellent drawings of birds, and from the experience has really developed her ability to look at component parts and details needed in to make a drawing look "real". My own children, who had no interest in drawing, would not have had the patience for it.

Although I am a professional artist, I have always felt my bird drawings could use some improvement. When I saw this book at the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge gift shop I thought it might help me with this specific problem and purchased a copy. As you can see in the photo I uploaded, by following the very simple step-by-step instructions I produced a more than adequate drawing of a Cardinal. Anyone could use this book either to learn simple drawing skills, or to improve in a specific area such as drawing birds. There is an entire series of these books so you are certain to find one that will suit your interest. The step-by-step instructions are entirely without words, so you could get use out of this book even if you do not speak English. The drawings are simple enough to follow that anyone who can hold a pencil would be able to use them, making them suitable for all ages and skill levels.

The only improvement I would like is for the book to open out and lay flat. I solved the problem with a large notebook clip as you can see in the photo - or a book stand would work also. Some of the pages are turned sideways so you might have to fiddle with them to figure out how to hold them open as you refer to them to create your own drawing.

I really liked the book and expect to work my way through all of the birds and hopefully, see a real improvement in my bird drawings in general. For people who only want to learn one or two birds, you will like to know there is a turkey in here for Thanksgiving, as well as many of the popular pet birds such as parrots and most of the iconic wild birds such as eagles and owls. Nice variety. In my opinion, well worth the price for the paperback.

Bought it for my son's birthday - didn't give it to him yet as his birthday didn't arrive. Book looks great. Simple illustrations but the birds have detail when finished. I'm sure he is going to love this. I think I might even be able to draw some of these.
