Cute book for teens.,
This review is from: How to Draw Horses (Paperback)
A friend gave this book to my 13-year-old daughter and she loves it. She thought the book was fun and easy to follow. She's been using it to draw a variety of critters, and I like the change from the steady stream of Manga I usually get from her. The author is obviously a history buff (which isn't a bad thing!). She includes everything from mythology to Renaissance Fairs to the Oregon Trail. With nothing more than a pencil, eraser, and an understanding of basic shapes, beginning artists can create a whole spectrum of horses, riders, and accessories. Both the text and style is a bit more sophisticated than grade school level, but I don't think that is the intended audience anyway. This book is more appropriate for teens and older kids. The nice thing is, unlike so many of the horse books out there, it isn't overly "girly." With the focus on horses throughout history (knights, cowboys, soldiers...) this is a really good book for teen and pre-teen boys who also like to draw. I don't think there is anything else quite like this out there already. I thought it was cute, and I would totally give this as a gift to some of the kids I know who like to draw.

If teaching is truly 90% theater, then this book gets an A+++!I have spent countless hours searching the net looking for information on horse armor... seriously ...where have you been all my life!? You will get everything you ever wanted in drawing horses, and superb tack drawing info too! If you've never seen a pencil before, then this book will probably be a little advanced for you, but if you love to draw horses, and you have Jack Hamm and Sam Savitt already in your collection, you need to add this one too! Stunning anatomy and hilarious little comments on each one. My fav? "now we just call it Twitter" Awesome!

Good Job!,

As a self taught animal artist, I have been a fan of Magnus' blog and deviantart site for years. As someone who has had to learn from books and trial & error, I love her more humorous, easy approach to drawing, even with high realism. Magnus has done a terrific job of bringing these concepts into one well written source for horse lovers. Good job!
