Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8AStep-by-step drawing lessons for over 80 insects and other creepy crawlies such as millipedes, ticks, and spiders are featured in this carefully constructed drawing book. All of the examples are done in pencil. A discussion of materials needed is included in the preface. Readers are invited to observe the drawings before starting and are given specific written instructions. Basic information such as the order and family of each creature and where it may be found is provided. This additional material makes this book more useful for both observations of insects and for report writing than other titles currently available. It's more complete than Lee J. Ames's Draw 50 Creepy Crawlies (Doubleday, 1992) and more inclusive than Christine Smith's How to Draw Insects (G. Stevens, 1997).AKathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn,

More About the Author

"You can draw." I've heard that a lot, since I was a kid. "You have real talent."

I have 2-point perspective drawings I did at age 5.

Was that simply talent? No, you need more than talent: you need skills (nobody's born with skills!). You need practice (you don't get practice if you don't try - and try again). And you need encouragement - otherwise you may start to believe, in a weak moment, that you "can't" draw.

The reason I could draw buildings in perspective at age 5 is that my father saw how much I loved to draw, and showed me how to draw in perspective.

Here's some advice that I hope will encourage you:

1) Draw easy stuff when you're "off." Draw difficult stuff when you're "on." The cartoon character you've drawn three gazillion times is easy - great to cheer you up on a rainy day. But if you want to get good, forget your cartoon character for a while. Really LOOK at something real and then draw it: your hand. Your foot. Your face in the mirror. Your mother. Your cat.

2) Don't worry about special pencils or paper if you don't already have them. DO make sure you have good light when you draw.

3) Put your name on your drawing, and the date, and keep it. The Great Unsolved Mystery of the World (IMHO) is why some drawings get better when they just sit around for a while - sometimes a year or more. Don't throw them out!

4) Have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars CREATES HOURS OF FUN., October 14, 2007
This review is from: Draw Insects (Learn to Draw (Peel)) (Paperback)
This is by far one of my favorite "children's" drawing books. I say children, but trust me, adults will find it just as useful and just as enchanting. The author, Doug DuBosque gives us step by step instructions on how to draw a wide range of insect critters. These drawings are in black and white (I find using a simple #2 pencil the best, along with some nice grade drawing paper) and are quite detailed. Now the word detailed may sound intimidating, but it actually is not at all once you get started. His lines and instructions are so simple that the very young can follow them with very little outside help. I photograph these little creatures and find, in my spare time, that is is quite gratifying to be able to draw what I photograph...it is sort of a hobby with me, one that I take great pleasure in. This book gives you a great start. Along with the wonderful drawings (step by step) the author offers, he also has provided a very readable and understandable text. The other books in his series are just as well done, it is just that I am particular to insects. In this small volume, the author also includes spiders, ticks, mites, centipedes and millipedes. All in all, a great little book and if you are interested in such things, a great by. As an added bonus, I have found that if you give a small kid a few pencils, a stack of scrap paper and this book, you can expect to not hear from them for a couple of hours or more, which, in my opinion, is far better than the T.V. or interrupting my naps. The kids seem to love this one.
