About more than the Looney Tunes!,
This review is from: Draw the Looney Tunes (Hardcover)
This book isn't just a book about drawing the Looney Tunes, it's a book about good drawing in general. It covers things like line of action, posing, construction, perspective, composition, clean-up, etc. It may sound like a cheesy children's drawing book from the title, but it absolutely is not. Not even close. It is a serious drawing book. I highly recommend it.

This book is a _beautiful_ example of what Warner Brothers Marketing can do when they put their minds to it (another fine example are the Golden Collection DVD sets!) - essentially a "shop" manual to the Looney Tunes way of animating and drawing. Although it should have been noted that most of the focus is on Bugs Bunny, once you get Bugs down, it's all a matter of getting the character look down, as the book demonstrates through vellum overlays, sketch progressions and even completed pieces of artwork how to get action lines correct, tail positions right, paw proportions perfect, etc. I would list downsides, however there aren't any! This book is an attractive hardcover for not only the discriminating collector, but for the casual fan, too! It bookends "The Art of Warner Brothers Animation" and "Bugs Bunny: 50 Years and Only One Grey Hare" very well! The layout is fantastic, and the additional "features" (fold-out scenery, dissections of perspective drawing, vellum overlays) make this book WELL worth the twenty-some dollars they're getting for it on Amazon (cover price: $40 US!). If you're a fan of Warner Brothers animation, don't hesitate to dump this book in to your cart!

This book will teach you much more than 'how to draw Looney Tunes' - including understanding simple shapes for character construction, staging and composition, and line of action. These principles serve as the cornerstone for conceptual artists, character designers, and animators - and the book does a very good job uncovering the material. The book is generously illustrated with plenty of Looney Tunes art, which serves to illustrate how each of the above principles are applied (no pun intended). The Warner Bros. style of art in this book is biased more towards the modern-era of Looney Tunes art (80's and 90's) vs. that of the Chuck Jones / Clampett era. Some purists may object to that. Overlooking that aspect, there's still plenty of worthwhile information to glean from reading this book. Highly recommended.

Pretty good! A nice addition to any fan of Warner Bros animiation. Along with books "Animating the looney tunes way" and "That's all Folks": the art of Warner Bros animation completes a three book series on classic Warner Bros animiation.

This has been one of the greatest books I've ever bought, changed my way to draw, I guess in terms of drawing techniques does not contribute THAT much, however, the quotes of all important artists about drawing conception throughout history redefine how a "how to" book should be. I've always been a big fan of the Looney Tunes, the way they move, the way they tell a story, it is as though they were alive, and precisely, this is what this book is all about, bringing life to the characters you create. If you're interested on this book is because you like the Looney, and you'd like to give some of the loosenes and joy they've got to your own drawings. This books describes that some of the famous artists who were involved with the process of bringing life to the looney Tunes, in fact, they believed what they were creating was indeed alive... and I guess that's the best advice I got from that book...Everything you're creating is alive an you should always treat it with that in mind.If you want to buy a book were you can learn how to draw the Looney Tunes, this is possible one of the best options you can get, but If you want to have a great reminder of how do you must feel when you draw something this is the best option I've you can come across ever.

As a novice product designer I was recently looking for a good book on how to draw. With hundreds of options, there were few books that actually taught me the stuff I really wanted to know. So I went through my personal library and found my copy of Draw the Looney Tunes. BAM. Jackpot. Why would someone interested in product design care about a book on cartoon characters? Because this is what I learned: How to start with the dynamics of the drawing and build detail from there. How to add mass to simple lines. How one moving part impacts the structure. How major geometric structures work together to define the dynamics of the whole. How perspective works. Finally! A book that teaches this in a way I both understand and care about. And much more. There are a lot of surprising ways in which learning to draw Bugs Bunny translates into designing pretty much anything else you can imagine. I had a lot of fun working my way through this book and, unlike product design books and videos, didn't feel pressured to go buy $400 in Copic markers before I even started. All I needed was this book, a pencil, and a sketch pad. Too bad this book is out of print. On the bright side, I suppose that gives those of us who have it an unfair advantage...

While this really isn't a how to step by step book but really more of a behind the scenes of WB's animation in the past, it is still a great resource for animators to reference back to when they are needing inspiration with their 2D animation projects. As most books detail, they go over basic shapes and form but they also stress the importance of knowing gesture before you draw, keeping flow with the characters and making sure your poses are strong. They also give examples of these techniques. The thing that sold me on this book however are the huge fold out images of old background matte paintings. Some of these images have perspective lines and show how the animators figured out how to cheat the perspective by adding several different vanishing points to one image that our eyes would pick up as the camera panned across this several foot long images. A great history lesson and if you haven't had any formal training this would be a good book to see how it was done back in the day.

Absolutely fantastic book. Not only does it give you tips on how to design the beloved WB characters, but some basics on how to draw for animation. Excellent addition to any animators library.

I think this book is a must have for anyone who enjoys creating characters and drawing cartoons. Even if you have no desire to animate this book is essential. It is laid out nice and simple. The reason I like this book so much is it is perfect to pick up every once in awhile and refresh your memory and become inspired. I got this book used for really cheap and I would have paid full price. The chapters use bugs bunny as the main character for teaching the lessons but you can easily take what you have learned and apply it to any character. Good explanation of character construction too.
