1.0 out of 5 stars Aweful Artwork, horrible examples, April 8, 2007

This review is from: Draw NASCAR (Paperback)
If you want to really learn to draw realistic cars, then get "Creating textures in colored pencil" by Gary Greene. He has some excellent examples in there that will "wow" you.

But, Lee Hammond's artwork in ALL of her books suck. She seems to be a beginner herself. I guess for the beginner the artwork looks attractive, or because it lacks depth or the complexity of detail, they don't feel intimidated and buy it. But, you know what, she is a BAD example and beginners should really learn from good examples. You should learn it the right way the first time. Just learn how to draw well first, then buy some other basic colored pencil books by other artists and NOT Lee Hammond. I mean unless you're just looking to please mom and dad.

You know some of the work in this book looked like she used crayola crayons. The portraits she does look kind of plastic. She just does not know how to render textures very well. She does not know how to make skin look real, or a car look like shiny metal as it really is. These are just some examples of what I mean. There are other colored pencil artists that will teach you like Lee Hammond claims she can teach you. But, they really can teach you to make skin look like skin and metal look like metal. If you really compare her work to other colored pencil artist's. You will see what I'm talking about. When you do, ask yourself this question, "Do I really want Lee Hammond to teach me?

Check out the Colored Pencil Society of America's CPSA [...], you won't find Lee Hammond there. Some of those artist's actually have books selling on Amazon to teach beginners!! Vera Curnow, founder, Gary Greene, Ann Kullberg, Janie Gildow, Kristy Kutch, etc. So, don't be discouraged when you see the work on CPSA's website, be inspired.
