4.0 out of 5 stars Grab the colored pencils!, March 14, 2002
By
"dollym" (MidAtlantic USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Draw Write Now, Book 1-8 (Paperback)
Colored pencils and a pad of paper are all your children (ages about 7-12) will need to get started making fun recognizable drawings. Simple line art - in a "draw this line" ... "now add this curve" format will guide your child to succesful illustrations for school projects or just for enjoyment.

The format for each drawing also includes a simple (grade 1 or 2) story in 2-3 sentences about the drawing (hence the "Write" part of the title) which your child can include in his final drawing.

But the best part is the grouped topics which provide lots of examples of items to draw within a given subject area (artic region, deserts, farm animals, pilgrims, etc.) 2nd-3rd graders and up can combine various components parts to build fairly elaborate scenarios, and all the items in the drawing will be recognizable (no more, "Mmm, Johnny. Very nice. Please tell me about THIS part of your picture") and so the satisfaction level on the part of the child is high.

This is not a comprehensive drawing curriculum. It probably isn't going to be helpful for an artistically gifted child, but us average joes who want to make a horse look like a horse and not a dog, it's a great tool and will provide many hours of drawing enjoyment for a child who likes to work independently.

This multi-volume set includes all the titles, but each title is also available separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improves handwriting and basic drawing skills! A++++, December 31, 2005
This review is from: Draw Write Now, Book 1-8 (Paperback)
This is a wonderful set of books. We are using it as a handwriting practice program (for 1st & 2nd grade) rather than a drawing program, but I'm sure it has applications both ways.

My children typically dread handwriting, but they really enjoy this format - learning to draw something recognizable and then copying the 3-4 informative sentences that are provided. Copying the drawings helps them with following step-by-step directions as well as fine motor control. They are justifiably proud of their sketches and often add other fanciful elements to their drawings.

And they take great care in their writing, even though they have to translate the writing into the D'Nealian format. In their old handwriting sessions, the writing would start neat and quickly deteriorate by the end of the page, but using this program, the writing is beautiful from beginning to end. It is almost as if they want their writing to look nice because they are so proud of their drawings.

We did buy special writing paper (top half of the page is blank for the drawing, and the bottom half has lines for writing) from a local teacher supply store, and I have also seen similar paper at Office Depot, although the qualify of the teacher supply store paper was considerably better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Keep Them On the Shelves!, March 18, 2004
This review is from: Draw Write Now, Book 1-8 (Paperback)
I am a teacher-librarian and I can't keep these drawing books on the shelves! I am always looking for drawing books and these are perfect for the primary and early elementary age group. The simple instructions and diagrams help the children to produce realistic drawings which are the starting point for a host of creative projects! I've noticed that the children are becoming more confident in their ability to draw and they are developing a LOVE of drawing. Tell me where to get more books like these!

4.0 out of 5 stars a nice educational package, November 4, 2007

This is a well-rounded approach to developing fine motor skills and an inspirational resource for learning how to draw better. The only critical remark I have is that IMO it would have been better to have the handwriting samples in slanted 'modern' manuscript (a.k.a. d'nealian), rather than the standard manuscript. Graded levels of difficulty in handwriting copy work would also help. As it is, it seems that the drawings are relatively more complicated than the writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just drawing..., October 11, 2007
This review is from: Draw Write Now, Book 1-8 (Paperback)
I purchased the set of Draw Write Now books (1-8) for our homeschool. They are GREAT! They have great art instruction and hadwriting practice as well as facts and further reading options for the picture that is being drawn. They are an excellent addition to any science or history program or use them for art and hadwriting. My kids (ages 3, 5 and 7) pull these books off of the shelf all of the time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun For Children, January 17, 2008
By
This review is from: Draw Write Now, Book 1-8 (Paperback)
This book set is engaging and fun for children. The books show pictures that were drawn by other children. Each lesson has an object or scene for drawing and writing. The lesson includes a picture which has about six to eight consecutive and detailed steps to help the child complete the picture. The child is encouraged to look at the whole picture and then focus on the simple and common shapes that are arranged together to complete the picture. There are teaching tips that are easy to implement. The writing portion of the book is suitable for younger, early elementary aged children, however the drawing portion of the book is suitable for older children as well as younger. It is easy to adapt the writing portion to meet the needs of the older child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good series for beginners, March 15, 2010

I really like these books. Nicely done and easy to follow. If you think you cannot draw a straight line, you will find the lessons eye opening! I use them for homeschooling. We use them not only for drawing & handwriting practice, but we also look up more information on what we're drawing and try to create a little unit study with it. I will say that all eight volumes stay pretty much at the same level. They just showcase different subjects. If you are looking for a drawing program that will progress, this probably isn't it. My older son mastered Draw Right Now pretty quickly and was eager to move on to something more detailed and challenging. He's now working out of Mark Kistler's books and loves them as well.
