Adrenaline & Variety,
By Scott Wheeler (Indianapolis, Indiana) - See all my reviews

This album has some of the best beats I've found. From the progressively quickening pulse of "Maximum Pace" to the cool, soothing roll of "Clip the Lines" - there is more than enough variety to go around. The slower tracks are well placed, and tracks 2, 4, 6, & 8 have some of the most gripping, steamy, hard dance rythyms this side of Enigma's "Mea Culpa". It's a shame their other albums don't measure up as well. Fortunately, they only seem to be getting better as time goes on. I'm looking forward to their next realase.

"Brief, But Pure Bliss",

In my humble opinion, X Marks the Pedwalk are one of the greatest, most ingenius bands of the electronic genre. Once considered, goth/industrial, they have progressed into a techno-pop/avante gaurde hybrid. Die hard industrial fans may not appreciate what they have evolved into, but they have trancended the rigid, stagnating cliches of industrial and have skyrocketed into the realm of intellectual and emotional artistic divinity. Not all of their songs are masterpieces on this album. I wish there were more songs on Drawback. But the few actual songs that are on Drawback had me playing the album for months. Sevren's voice has a razor sharp tenor. The synths are beautifully textured and layered with a velvet polish. The beats are complex and refined. The melodies create a stiring since of awe and bittersweet wonderment. A strong recommendation for anyone, who enjoys refined, intellectual, and original music that touches the soul. James Cowart

Proof that the industrial genre has room for expansion,
This review is from: Drawback (Audio CD)
At first, I wasnt sure what to make of this album. The first track lays a relaxed, almost ambient style, but by track two, beats and vocals hit and reorganize the whole scene. The vocals are distorted, reminiscient of (ugh) Marilyn Manson, and this almost made me toss this cd in the trash right then. But I listened on, and eventually I settled my dispute with the poor vocalist who posed to ruin his own delicate creation. But that's the nature of avante-pop, and this album can be recognized as an original exploration into new territories of ebm, industrial, and the electronic genre in general. The lyrics are in english, but they may as well be Latin, since the distortion only allows a word here or there to be known. Which, while being annoying, is simultaneously enveloping; the listener is able to interpret for himself what the lyrics are, which provide a more personal valuing of the music. The last song is a completely different electronic sound altogether, remerging back to XMP's older industrial days. This song doesnt fit the album at all, and for that reason, I made myself another copy of this cd and left that song out. Not that it's all bad, I like half of it, but it doesnt belong on this cd. All in all, I recommend this album to any electronic pioneer, it offers an emotional yet intellectually stimulating experience not found elsewhere.
