Book Description

April 12, 2012
In the early 20th century, two female baseball players signed with minor league teams only to have their contracts canceled when their gender became public. They withdrew politely, never having the chance to put their talents on display. In this historical novel, Cleveland pitcher Annie Cardello does not go so quietly. When the baseball commissioner cancels her signed agreement, she vows to retaliate. A volatile woman with family roots in ancient Sicily, Annie plots her revenge--murder. A deft blend of sports history and thriller, Drawing Card demonstrates the danger of a woman scorned, especially one with a mean curve ball.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A great work of historical fiction, Drawing Card takes the reader into a world many are not familiar with while others are all too familiar. The story, though fictional, is based on the many stories of women who wanted to play baseball at various times in history but have been denied that chance. It is a timely story as this is still an issue faced by young ladies today. Drawing Card will get people talking about baseball and equality of opportunity." --Leslie Heaphy, Associate Professor of History, Kent State University at Stark Campus

"Iconic baseball historian Dorothy Seymour Mills has given us a lusty, time-traveling murder mystery that romps across centuries and continents. The athletic soul of Annie Cardello Smith has been smothered from the time it longed to run free in ancient Sicily, to its twentieth century incarnation as an exceptionally talented American baseball player. A thousand years of repressed rage and her Sicilian mafia background make Annie a dangerous woman and unforgettable heroine." --Jennifer B. Ring, Professor Political Science, University of Nevada, author of Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don't Play Baseball

"I loved Drawing Card. In this extraordinary novel, Dorothy Mills combines an understanding of human behavior with an outstanding knowledge of history. I found the book compelling from start to finish. Wonderful!" --Mel Poplock, Chairperson, Naples, Florida Chapter, Society for American Baseball Research (SABR)

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood on the Baseball July 9, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A time-traveling tale of epic proportions disguised as an absorbing baseball novel, "Drawing Card" weaves a spellbinding narrative about Annie Cardello, a hot-blooded descendant of Sicilian sulfur miners whose desire for revenge against the dark forces that kept her from playing professional baseball is in direct conflict with her struggle to lead a good life as she marries, raises her son, and never forgets what she was forced to forfeit. "Drawing Card" is a bravura performance by Dorothy Seymour Mills, the doyenne of baseball research whose gift for mesmerizing storytelling more than matches her distinguished and award-winning way with historical fact-finding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Tale May 10, 2012
Format:Paperback
Worlds collide in this Hitchcock-like tale of the consequences of a talented young woman's ambition shattered. With an authentic portrayal of the roles that gender and class play in hindering a free spirit, Dorothy Seymour Mills captivates the reader with her strangely flawed and tenacious character, Annie Cardello. Mills' extensive knowledge of history and ethnic cultures makes the fast paced story all the more real. Moreover, while the events occur during earlier times, inequities that persist today become crystal clear. This is certainly a novel to recommend and to pass on to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baseball Is Just The Beginning . . . June 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
"Drawing Card" is much more than a baseball novel, but features enough of the author's wide knowledge of the sport to set a good foundation for an entertaining trip with glimpses ranging from Judge K. M. Landis through ancient Greece to the mid-20th century organized crime mob. The author's recent fiction has featured her excellent research skills--"Drawing Card" doesn't disappoint there--and a "what could have been" element keeps the book rolling along nicely. There's plenty here to attract both baseball cranks immersed enough to ponder the effects of Landis' iron rule and those just looking for a good love story.

"Drawing Card" is a terrific book. The author successfully combines a compelling work of fiction with an impressive body of historical research. The characters are developed and the plot unfolds within the context of what was really happening in the world at the time. Don't miss this one!
