3.0 out of 5 stars This book is good but not great
I bought this book thinking that it will show me block style and the skeletal structure but it doesn't it just shows a bunch of poses. So if your looking for a book that shows you block style or skeletal structure move on because this book isn't it. But if your looking for a book that shows poses this book is it.

Giovanni Civardi instructs the serious artist how to draw the female body in a way which is very inspriring. His talent in the arts can make any amateur artist want to excel in learning how to draw the female body correctly. The book contains a wide collection of poses broken down in: The Standing Figure, The Moving Figure, The Seated Figure, The Kneeling Figure, The Reclining and Outstretched Figure, The Figure in Depth, and a few Photographic References. Most of the poses in the book are Civardi's drawings. Throughout the book Civardi gives instruction on how to compose a nude female life drawing by encouraging the artist to look for specific qualities in the figure. For example: Light and Shadow, Depth Perception and Porportion, and the rules of thumb on the Characteristics and Placement of Anatomical Parts of the Female Anatomy. But this book may be used as reference to the artist to create their own works of art. There are very few books available that will do this, and I would suggest "Drawin

5.0 out of 5 stars detailed, and unique, June 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Drawing the Female Nude (Paperback)
I am a professional comic book artist with Sirius Entertainment. This is a book for all artists who would like a better understanding of the female form. This is one on the few books showing such amazing views, movements, and positions, not regularly found in most anatomy books. The detail and instruction are amazing.

A wonderful supplement to Mr. Civardi's Drawing the human anatomy! For those of you who wish to study the female anatomy in detail, this is the book for you. While you may be familiar with the general proportions of the human body, this book will give you the specific proportions of the femal body! Get it

Being an artist who is looking for books that contain a variety of poses, I stumbled upon a gold-mine with this book. The sketches are clean and the lines are beautiful, making it a perfect book to work from for figure drawings. This book is an awesome reference tool for anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Drawing the Female Nude (Paperback)
This book reminds me a lot of The Nude Figure: A Visual Reference for Artists by Mark Edwards Smith. However, unlike that book, this book doesn't use any photographs and it actually has text. But like the Nude Figure, this book explains mostly how the female body responds to certain poses and how it affects the skeletal structure. Very little is offered here in the way of drawing technique. But if you're someone who prefers to buy books which contain female nude in art. you might be disappointed to find that only 2 different models are used in this book whereas the Nude Figure has around 10 times that many including male models.

I study and sketch forms, and was hooked by the excellent poses in this book. Its a treat to practice sketching all the poses in this book. I bought this book at the local BN out of impluse ...and enjoying my purchase very much. Tried out a complex pose yesterday, very gratifing.
I am not sure about the instructional pose in the book (on a glance I didnt see much). WHich is not crictcal for me, as all I need was some poses to practice from.
So I would say this book is aimed at medium to advance sketchers and not for beginners in pencilling.
PS: The second model is excellent ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Drawing the Female Nude (Paperback)
For many years I have been drawing women, and only women. The female figure I think is just nicer to look at.

The problem I would always run into when starting a drawing is thinking of a pose, and actually pulling it off. That is why I purchased "Drawing the Female Nude" [...]. The only other option I could think of was to hire an actual model, and that's just too expensive and awkward.

Drawing the Female Nude is written (and illustrated) by Giovanni Civardi, an Italian artist and instructor who also wrote and illustrated "Drawing Human Anatomy" and "Drawing the Male Nude". His drawings are as realistic as they come, which is how I like it.

In this book he uses two models, one that is tall and has more boyish figure and one who is a bit womanlier in the hips and butt. Both of them are definitely European, you can tell by the furry armpits, which you can "edit out" in your own drawings easily, but it really doesn't detract from the book at all unless you are tremendously shallow. That is also part of the reason I really like this book.

The women in this book look like real women. Their breasts are not super-round and perfect, their brows are not perfectly plucked, and they do not have washboard abs. I am not saying they are fat (I am probably bigger than them), they are real.

These two women are drawn in many different poses including standing, sitting, stretching, twisting, turning, lying, and even some yoga positions from just about every different angle. Each pose includes his own tips on pulling it off, and information on different techniques and materials. He uses charcoal and pencil to sketch out the women. There are also a few actual photographs of the models in this book.

I really like his tips on shading and shaping the muscles. He really teaches you a lot about the female muscular structure in this book too, which is something every artist should study a bit about to reach his or her full potential. He encourages every artist to find his or her own unique style, not just to copy.

This book was definitely worth the $[...]. I paid over three years ago. I still use this book as a reference, and I do feel that it has made me an improved artist. This book I think would be an excellent gift for all artists who like to draw real looking women, whether amature or professional

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for figure artists, September 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Drawing the Female Nude (Paperback)
The front and end chapters of this book describe different drawing styles (tone, line, constructive and structural figure drawing), proportions and surface anatomy (from photographs), The intervening hundred-plus pages are devoted primarily to showcasing Civardi's own excellent work with two models. The multitude of different poses presented should be of considerable help to anyone grappling with the challenges of gestures, perspective, foreshortening, shading, graceful renderings and artistic adjustments. One may wonder why the author hasn't gone into great detail about drawing technique. The answer is simply that that's thoroughly covered in his other books.
