Book Description

September 2002
Here's all the information readers need to render landscapes with confidence and skill in a variety of media, including pen and ink, graphite pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, watersoluble pencil and more. Easy-to-follow instructions show them how to master each kind of landscape, including hills and mountains, woodlands, wide open plains, moorlands and even water scenes.

Also included are simple practice exercises designed to help artists master specific aspects of drawing landscapes, from smudging graphite powder to create the impression of a swirling, stormy sky to using pen and ink to capture fine detail. The book ends with a series of detailed step-by-step projects that bring together a number of diverse techniques and subjects in one drawing.

Melvyn Petterson studied at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts. An established artist and print-maker, he teaches drawing and printmaking in both the U.S. and the U.K.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

After eloquently asserting the importance of landscape, Petterson and Kearey cover landscape composition in discussions of focal point, picture shape, and viewpoint, all amply illustrated in a variety of media, including pen and sepia ink, pastel, water color, and pencil. As the authors discuss light and shade using monotone and color examples and exercises, readers will appreciate the delicacy of shadows and their variations depending on season and medium. A chapter on working outdoors provides useful information on necessary equipment and exercises in working rapidly, followed by detailed sections on such subjects as skies, mountains and hills, open spaces, and water. This review is from: Drawing Landscapes (Paperback)
I really like the images used throughout the book. This is not so much of a how to book but it is a great source of inspiration and introduction to a variety of media.
