I recommend the better made Art of Drawing, May 7, 2008
This review is from: Drawing Lessons (Dover Art Instruction) (Paperback)
I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually do. Dover usually does a great job with their efforts, but somebody at the company did a questionable job with this reproduction.
This is the exact same book as the
The Art of Drawing in content, the difference being size (length x width) and reproduction quality. Drawing Lessons is smaller in overall size, being about 10-7/8" x 8-1/4", which would be fine except that the drawings are actually slightly blurry! You may not even notice if you only get this volume; you'd have to get both books to compare them directly side by side.
As it turns out, The Art of Drawing by Madison books, which is about 11" x 8-1/2", has superior reproduction: this is especially noticeable in the excellent drawings of women & children. Since both titles are essentially the same book with slightly different dimensions, I'd normally give them the exact same rating, yet Drawing Lessons being blurry in its reproduction seems pretty unacceptable to me.
The only reason I'd recommend getting Drawing Lessons is if the other title is no longer available, or Dover re-releases this with better production quality. It really is that simple.

This is an excellent instruction book with beautiful drawings.
Don't make my mistake, this is exactly the same book as "The Art of Drawing" by the same author.
