Book Description

Drawing Out the Muses is based on the premise that visual inspiration can be found anywhere; in nature, with household objects, though sound, using raw visual elements, dreams and even from being uninspired. This book shows you how sources of creativity can be found absolutely everywhere, and at anytime; while giving you countless ways of looking at absolutely anything resulting in infinite forms of expression.

Artists will learn about the nature of creativity and different ways of seeing things, with over 300 fun and serious examples, step-by-step processes, exercises, ideas, explorations, things to do, and ways of interpreting the world around you, most with multiple variations from which to choose. Every last one is designed to give you something to work on or play with, while helping to spark your own creativity in the process.

Drawing Out the Muses was written for all visual artists by any definition, who may be at any career level from beginner to accomplished professional, and working in any medium, including traditional crafts. It is for any visually-oriented person who is interested in expanding their own creativity. Designers, students, hobbyists, educators, workshop leaders and event planners will find this book considerably useful.

Alexandria Levin’s Drawing Out the Muses: Find and Develop Unlimited Creative Inspiration is an excellent book for those needing to unblock creative blocks, or simply looking for new inspiration. It contains hundreds of fun and thoughtful suggestions for creative pursuits all made interesting by Ms. Levin.
The author speaks to her readers in an easy, whimsical, and relaxed way throughout the book. Her writing voice is so comfortable I can envision sitting in her kitchen, drinking tea, and having a brainstorming session with my newfound friend.
As an artist, you may have found yourself up against a wall, facing a blank page, stumped by a project, and scratching your head. This book is for anyone who has ever become stuck, with a cacophony of inner voices nagging you to get to work. Ultimately, it all becomes a sort of rush hour gridlock in your head, and nothing much is ever accomplished until the traffic is unjammed, your creativity unblocked. Drawing Out the Muses is more than just a road map around the traffic jam of creative blocks, it is a treasure map that will put you on the path to artistic discovery.
Levin’s book is for all visual artists, regardless of their level of experience or the medium in which they work. I found it easy to imagine applying her ideas to any artistic endeavor I might undertake, and already have an installation piece in mind for my garden.
I read Levin’s book start to finish, but you could just as easily begin by choosing a specific inspiration from Levin’s eleven Finding Inspiration chapters (Nature, Household Items, Life Events, Music and Sound, Dreams, etc.) and take your own meandering path through this book.
Anyone stuck in a creative rut and in need of a change, looking for new ideas or a different way of approaching projects would benefit from Drawing Out the Muses. Thank you, Ms. Levin, for a treasure of a book.

More About the Author

Alexandria Levin was born in New York City, and has lived for extensive periods of time in Boston, San Francisco, Albuquerque and Philadelphia. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, she has always been true to her own artistic vision, while remaining serious about the career details of being an artist. As a painter who believes deeply in continuous artistic growth, and never settling, she has created four strong, distinct bodies of work over the years, all the while exploring various materials, techniques and creative approaches.

Besides her diverse accomplishments as a visual artist, writing has always been evident in Alexandria's life ever since the age of 15 when she began writing poetry and essays, many of which have been published in print and online. Hopelessly creative, perceptive, organized and ethical, she conceived Painted Jay Publishing to help change and improve things for all artists; in business, knowledge of the art world, arts education and creative processes. More books are currently in development. See

Of course, Alexandria is dedicated to her own demanding muse. Many of the results can be seen at for oil paintings, for graphic design, lyric poetry and accidental photography, and at for a good old-fashioned web log.
