If you buy one book on wildlife and animal painting in oils, this book should be your first choice!,

This review is from: Drawing and Painting Animals: How to Capture the Essence of Wildlife in your Art (Paperback)
I have been an professional artist for over 30 years, and I recently purchased about 7 books on painting animals to improve my skills. This book by far, no comparison, is the best. The information and painting demos and examples are easy to understand and follow, and would help any artist no matter what level they are at. His paintings along with those of other artists included are top quality, offering a feast for the heart and eyes to any artist. Edward Aldrich gives you some of the best painting step by step information, not leaving you asking questions, like some books. He tells you exactly how he paints to get the warm and glowing results to create his beautiful wildlife paintings. Plus tons of other great painting information. This is the best money I have spent on a book on painting. If you like his paintings you will love this book. Thank you Edward for really giving of yourself, sharing your art, and knowhow, and choosing great examples of other professionals. I have learned so much, your book is a gem!

There's a lot of 'how to paint animals' books out there, but after looking through a bunch of them, this one rates at the top for me so far. The author is really generous with his knowledge and shares his whole process very clearly from start to finish. Comprehensive and helpful and page after page of great tips, insights and examples. For someone this good to be willing to commit it all to paper so openly, - this book is a real find. Even new painters not that interested in painting animals would benefit from this one. A real keeper.

Amazing insight behind the scenes of some extraordinary and gorgeous art work. This could stand alone as a coffee table book featuring Wildlife Art. It goes further than that though by illustrating how these pieces are constructed. The language is straight-forward and easy to understand. This effort makes you want to go into your own studio and start working on your own creations with the guidance of these [there are more than one artist featured] artists. This book covers a wide range of subjects and gives the reader a tremendous understanding of the steps required to initiate, follow through and complete fantastic, realistic, artistic work. An artist can look at, read, and gain an appreciation for the subjects being discussed while at the same time translate those lessons to other subjects such as dogs, or cats, or squirrels [anything with fur]. It also documents how much time the artist took to complete a particular step in the process, very instructive to anyone who attempts paintings of their own. TH

I found this book good for painting backgrounds for wild animals and settings to place the wildlife in, something I have not always found easy.It also gives examples of different lighting effects which I found useful. It covers all types of mediums.

After reviewing several books on painting animals, I chose this book. The artist provides in depth advice. The book also explains how to prepare masonite board to paint on. I've never done this, but I want to try it. This is a great book that is easily understood.

THIS BOOK IS MORE TO THE POINT. THE COLOR PLATES AND EXAMPLES ARE EXCEPTIONAL. THE EXAMPLES OF DRAWING AND PAINTING TECHNIQUES ARE VARIED AND WELL DONE. THE LAYOUT IS WELL PLANNED AND EXPLANATIONS ARE CLEAR AND CONCISE. THE AUTHER TALKS TO ME AS IF TO A FRIEND. I LIKE THAT. THE USE OFSEVERAL ARTISTS TEACHING THEIR METHODS IS EXACTLY WHAT I LOOK FOR. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE STEPS IN THE DEVELOPEMENT OF A PAINTING HOWEVER. WHAT WE NEED AS ARTISTS IS CLOSER SCRUTINY OF THE EXAMPLES AND REALLY DIGGING INTO THE ARTWORK BY THE ART INSTRUCTORS. WE NEED EXAMPLES OF WHAT NOT TO DO. HOW DO THE ARTISTS TREAT WORK THAT DOESN'T GO THE WAY THEY PLANNED? SHARE SOME OF YOUR FAILURES AS WELL AS YOUR SUCCESSES. THE FEATURED ARTIST IN THIS BOOK IS RIGHT UP THERE WITH ISAACS, BRENDERS AND BATEMAN. MOVE OVER GUYS. OVERALL, BUY THIS BOOK AND LEARN GOOD ART.

Excellent book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in drawing animals and wildlife and painting them in oils. Clearly and straight-forwardly written with many nicely reproduced drawings and paintings by a variety of superb artists to illustrate the technical material covered in the text. The author also delves into his experiences as a wildlife artist and discusses his approach to wildlife art in a succinct yet revealing way that offers generous advise.
