5.0 out of 5 stars The master at work, April 6, 2000
By
This review is from: Drawings of Mucha: 70 Works by Alphonse Maria Mucha Including 9 in Full Color (Paperback)
The pencil drawings in this book are fascinating. You can really see how he worked on each design, and occasionally the original sketch has some interesting variations from the final product. I particularly enjoyed some of the less popular works that are to be found here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, June 23, 1999

This review is from: Drawings of Mucha: 70 Works by Alphonse Maria Mucha Including 9 in Full Color (Paperback)
Nice to see some of Mucha's preliminary drawings, which are softer and simpler by nature, often (in my opinion) more beautiful than the finished pieces. Not all his best work, and the black-and-whites are a bit greyish, but highly recommended nonetheless.

I appreciated this book as it gives a different perspective on Mucha's works. Being mostly a collection of pencil drawn sketches, it lets you enter the creative process of the artist, while other books I own just present the finished work.

Really useful for who'd like to understand his approach to drawing.

This affordable and brief work to the works of Alphonse Mucha offers an introduction to the artist. Includes some early works, preliminary drafts, and finished products. Useful for those who are studying technique--you can see how he drew (pencil--a few in ink). About 60 illustrations in all, 8 of these in color. I remain fascinated with Mucha's perspectives on beauty. Very inspirational!

I loved all the drawings, especially the sketches included. It has a very personal feel, like its a secret sketchbook that you shouldn't be looking at.

This book shows more of his process of how he developed the layout and compositions
than the finished piece. Nice to see the development of some of he finest Art Nouveau Style
ever done. The man was a master what else needs to be said?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice price given the content, January 16, 2011

I own a couple of other books that feature Mucha's artwork, but I jumped on getting this book because it has something which the other books have very little off: the preliminary drawings/ sketches. I buy artist's sketchbooks and drawings to try and figure out their artistic process. Looking at the collection of drawings in this book it's hard to tell whether Mucha is able to render his very clean drawings in one pass or whether he progressively tightens up his drawings as he works on them. I would assume it's the latter, but the man was talented, so I may be wrong.

The book not only contains pencil drawings, but also some preliminary paintings and prints. It also has a good variety. You won't see Mucha's famous posters in here, but some equally pretty, lesser known works. And although the bulk of the book depicts women, it actually has a couple of drawings of men (at one point I wondered if Mucha drew men at all, and in fact he does, just not often).

The quality of the reproduction is average. The drawings mostly look gray, however since the drawings are old, it may not be wise to expect high contrast between line and paper. Anyway, even with the gray-ish backgrounds, you can still see the drawings, so it's not a big problem. There are 9 pages that show artwork in color, but there is some artwork which should be in color but aren't printed that way. Some of those works look a bit muddier than the line drawing reproduction, but thankfully there's very few of those in the whole book.

So in conclusion: if you're a fan of Mucha, this is a very good book to get, especially for the price. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars i want more, November 12, 2008
This review is from: Drawings of Mucha: 70 Works by Alphonse Maria Mucha Including 9 in Full Color (Paperback)
when i first picked it up it felt like a colouring book (cover, thickness and line style of mucha's work). he's the man and there's some awesome drawings to study where you really get the feeling of his hand. but at only 70 drawings i'm still hungry for more.
