Book Description

July 27, 2010

No stranger to the destructiveness of twisted minds, former FBI Special Agent Sloane Burbank never expected evil to invade the lives of her family . . .

When her mother is viciously attacked in her posh Manhattan apartment, Sloane realizes this was no ordinary robbery. The thieves came for something special—willing to brutalize, even kill for it, if necessary—and though it's clear Sloane's father is somehow involved, he isn't talking. Then a mysterious message left for the respected art dealer sets Sloane on a dangerous course to uncover a deadly secret hidden in her father's past . . . while carefully guarding secrets of her own.

A sadistic, power-mad monster is focusing his attention on the people Sloane cherishes, and not even Special Agent Derek Parker, the man she loves, can help her. She alone must uncover a shocking truth before time runs out.

Because suddenly a killer is tightening the noose . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Kane's disappointing sequel to Twisted (2008) pays more attention to the romantic growing pains between FBI agent Sloane Burbank and her hunky former FBI colleague, Derek Parker, than the crime at hand. Dragon Head, boss of a Chinese triad, is targeting Sloane's father, Matthew, and his circle of friends in a years-old revenge plot that hinges on a stolen painting. Derek and his task force are already on the Dragon Head's scent for stateside crimes when Sloane's parents' Manhattan apartment is burglarized. Matthew privately hires Sloane to protect him while keeping the past hidden from the Feds and Derek. Despite a few incidents early on, the heart-racing action is relegated to Sloane and Derek's bedroom—and when the two aren't amorously engaged, they're arguing about who's hiding what from whom. They're not hiding anything from the reader, though: Kane tells us too much up front, and little is left for the big reveal. (Sept.)

4.0 out of 5 stars RIVETING THRILLER SPICED WITH ROMANCE, September 13, 2009
This review is from: Drawn in Blood (Hardcover)
For this reader top thriller writers don't waste any time - they rope you in and tie you up with the opening pages. Andrea Kane (Twisted) does this so well with DRAWN IN BLOOD you're hooked by page 2.

Rosalyn Burbank is a mid fifties matron who lives with her retired art dealer husband, Matthew, in an apartment on New York's Upper East Side. She likes to leave work and arrive home before her husband to have a bit of time to unwind before he arrives. One evening she was surprised to find their door unlocked, and called to Matthew, "It's me. You forgot to close the door behind you again. No the smartest idea. One day, someone's going to... She never finished her sentence.

Mathews later arrives home to find his wife brutally beaten, gagged and tied, and their apartment ransacked. She didn't see her attackers, only knows that they spoke in a Chinese dialect. Matthew knows more about that than he has told her. But he is compelled to tell his daughter, FBI Special Agent Sloane, when he realizes that his entire family is in jeopardy.

Sloane has recently resumed her relationship with fellow agent Derek Parker. (Repeated consummations of their passion for each other are both wild and frequent). In fact, they've moved in together and have vowed to let nothing separate them again. However, Sloane has promised her father that she will tell Derek nothing about his confidence to her, yet she well knows she needs Derek's help.

Seems the threats to Matthew and several of his longtime friends are coming from Dragon Head, a malevolent Chinese crime boss. It's payback time for an almost 15 year old supposed offense. In parallel goings on museums across the world are being looted - their treasures stolen and dead guards left behind.

Kane interlaces all of these activities nicely with special emphasis on the FBI's Art Crime Team. If you like your crime spiced with coupling, Drawn In Blood is for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars so-so... nothing special, January 12, 2010
This review is from: Drawn in Blood (Hardcover)
I'm normally an avid Andrea Kane reader. Anything she writes I try to grab up. This book fell short though. I guess for one, I thought Sloan (the main character) was somewhat annoying. She seems almost too self-centered and I can honestly say that if there's another book in this series with her, I won't read it. Granted the book itself is fairly good but not up to Andrea Kane's normal writing. This is a can live with it, can live without type of read. Nothing special but it's not a bad bet either if you just want something to chew up time reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such realistic characters., September 8, 2009
This review is from: Drawn in Blood (Hardcover)
Former FBI Special Agent Sloane Burbank's hand is healing well. She is determined to get well enough to rejoin the Bureau. For now she consults for the Bureau on a case-by-case basis and she has retained all her old contacts. As to her private life, Sloane feels ready to take the next step in her relationship with her former colleague Derek Parker. They are finally going to live together. But then Sloane receives a frantic call from her father, Matthew.

Matthew Burbank and his partners witnessed a crime (murder) thirteen years ago while overseas on business. Now Matthew has come face-to-face with the killer while in Chinatown. Even worse, he gets home to find the place trashed and his wife harmed. He tells Sloane everything but makes her promise not to tell Derek. This is hard for Sloane. Keeping her father's secret means she must withhold vital information that would help Derek (who is part of the Asian Criminal Enterprise Task Force) on their Red Dragon case. This case will either make their relationship stronger or tear it completely apart.

**** FOUR STARS! Even though this continues with the main characters from Twisted, you do not have to read anything before opening this title if you do not wish. Each title's plot is stand-alone, but the main characters and their relationship is an ongoing theme. This means that as the series progresses (and yes, I believe more are forthcoming) those who read each title will enjoy the stories much more.

There is much more going on than I can tell without spoilers, which I refuse to ever give out and ruin surprises. Suffice it to say that there are several characters on the good side, as well as the bad side. Andrea Kane has a talent for making fictional characters so realistic, I could almost swear they were real people. ****
