5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mini by Giffen and Breitweiser, March 19, 2006
This review is from: Drax the Destroyer: Earthfall (Paperback)
Ok, so I skipped this mini when it was out (more
like "didn't even see it!"), however, with Marvels'
Annihilation project looming large (as I write this)
they have wisely decided that Drax should be
released as a trade. I picked up the trade at my
local comic shop along with the Annihilation prologue,
written by the same author (Giffen) and featuring
several of the same characters.
Is Earth Fall essential to understanding Annihilation? No.
Is it worth every penny to snatch this gem up becuase
it will provide more understanding to the prologue
(and is just plain ol great anyway)? ABSOLUTELY!
Mitch Breitweiser is a "fantastic" artist. His work
reminds one of Greg Land, but without that Vogue magazine
look that feels so over-stylized at times (sorry Greg).
Breitweiser is definitly a head-and-shoulders talent
above most of the rest. His tone for the book is perfect.
It's well-suited for Giffen, whoo offers a mix of a kind
of dark-humor with an overall seriousness and sci-fi
noir that will easily appeal to fans of flicks like Pitch Black,
Riddick, T2 etc. without feeling overly derivative.
Earth Fall offers a fresh perspective and
action-packed presentation that will keep one's
attention throughout.
Its a smart read that avoids the pitfalls that so easily overcome
lesser talents in the industry and is superior
(imo) to other recent stories in Marvel's cosmic canon
that feature these and other like characters (infinty Gauntlet/Crusade etc).
Earth Fall is self contained
and gives us a Drax we've not really seen before (an 'intelligent'
improvement). If you are psyched for Annihilation and
love a SOLID read, then get on the hunt for this
overlooked treasure. I was a skeptic for the
Annhilation premis before reading this and now that
I have, I have changed my opinion considerably. Giffen
should be well up for the job of delivering the goods.
Well worth checking out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and Satisfying, November 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Drax the Destroyer: Earthfall (Paperback)
Drax the Destroyer finds himself spaceshipwrecked in Alaska, psychically bonds with a disturbed girl and does battle with several super-villains. The art in "Earth Fall" is superb; it captures the drippy gloom of the Far North.

I grew up in the 1970s reading Jim Starlin's "Captain Marvel." The Destroyer was the supporting character I identified with the most. It was his purity, his strength of purpose. "Earth Fall" is faithful to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drax Pax helluva Whack, January 20, 2009
This review is from: Drax the Destroyer: Earthfall (Paperback)
This is simply a great book. Cool characters, great relationships, credible dialogue, and a strong sense of place. Stands up to multiple readings. As others have noted, well written and illustrated. Really, an overlooked gem and well worth your time. Get it.
