4.0 out of 5 stars Hey, Broken Lizard Can Do No Wrong in My World . . .
The problem with this film is that it falls into a narrow, narrow film niche: horror-comedy. Many horror fans will loathe the fact that the film parodies common tropes of the genre . . . many comedy fans may not "get" the parody itself. Thus, you have the wildly mixed reviews that you find here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat enjoyable romp from Broken Lizard troupe
Whether or not you liked Broken Lizard's last film, 2002's cult hit Super Troopers, and depending on how low brow you like your comedy, will determine how muh you like Club Dread. The five members play various counselors for washed up rocker Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton, played with wonderful comedic abandon) on his Pleasure Island, where the staff and the vacationers...

Personally, I found this work hysterical (but I love goofy films like "Idle Hands," "Evil Dead," and "April Fool's Day"). Bill Paxton portrayal of a Jimmy Buffet "wannabe" is spot-on!! Moreover, it was refreshing to see Kevin Heffernan fearlessly tackle a character completely different from Farva: a spiritual masseur! Still, Jay Chandrasekhar steals the show not merely because he is one of the most handsome men in existence, but because his character of Putnam is RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY!!

If you don't "get" why "Shaun of the Dead" was so uproariously funny, this film may leave you confused and disappointed. Still, you should buy it for the Pac-Man scene alone!!! And, no, it's not "Super Troopers" . . . BUT WHAT IS??! It is just a silly film . . . exactly what it was intended to be!! On that level, it succeeds!!

Just give this film a chance:) (And buy "Beerfest" too!!)

at the University of Pittsburgh's free sneak preview. All I have to say is wow! It was amazing. It is slightly scary (not expected) and overwhelmingly, extremely funny (more than expected). It doesn't play off of Super Troopers' success at all. This movie has a life of its own and is worth seeing. I love it. All I want to know if when does it come out on DVD?

4.0 out of 5 stars Wildly Entertaining, and Not a Spoof!, March 21, 2004
"Club Dread" was one of the most entertaining, funny, and scary movie that I have seen in a long time. It also kept me guessing, right untill the very end. I found it to be rude, crude, and vicious fun. It is the second film in the comedy troop "Broken Lizard" who made a film about two years ago called "Super Troopers" which I have never seen. I almost gave this movie five stars, but was stopped because of the first scene. I thought that the first scene was a little dull, and after that I was scared that the entire movie would be a waste of time. I was very very wrong. The movie stars Bill Paxton, who I thought was great in this as Coconut Pete, Brittany Daniel from "Joe Dirt," and the leader of Broken Lizard, Jay Chandrasekhar, who played a tennis instructor who thinks that his playing is great.

The movie takes place on Pleasure Island resort in Costa Rica. Run by former former rock star Coconut Pete. He has young people come and have a good time, away from phones, and other technology, and wants his visitors to have a good time with the staffers. The staffers include Putnam, the tennis instructor, Sam, the captain of the "Fun Police" and Jenny, the aerobics instructor who has a reputation of sleeping with many of the staff members. Jenny becomes interested with the new masseur Lars whose has hands like magic, much to the dismay of Putnam. All of the staff members are ready to have fun for the week, untill one of the staff members is killed. More and more start to die, and they are killing people based on the lyrics of Coconut Pete's songs. Pete hired the security guard Hank to help them find out who is killing everybody, as they try and survive the week at the resort, all while suspecting everybody including each other.

"Club Dread" sounds like a spoof, but it is not. It is pure horror/comedy. I thought that it was scarier then recent horror films like "Freddy vs Jason" and "Dawn of the Dead" and I liked how it was hilarious as well. It wasn't to long in the end, and I felt that the entire money was worth the money that it spent. I don't see how it didn't make alot of money, but it will probally do much better when it comes out on video. I thought Bill Paxton was a big highlight as Coconut Pete, and he was hilarious. It has graphic violence, and graphic nudity, but it was still a great film. If it wasn't for the beginning, it would be a five star movie, and mabye one of the best of the year. I am awaiting the next Broken Lizards comedy.

ENJOY!

Rated R for violence/gore, sexual content, language and drug use.

4.0 out of 5 stars son of a son of a bitch, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Club Dread (DVD)
I personally think this movie is better than most do. It may not be as funny as Super Troopers but it is rather entertaining. I find Bill Paxton's second-rate Jimmy Buffet character Coconut Pete to be absolutely hysterical. The film serves its purpose of having little plot and some good laughs very well, but if your expecting some sort of artistic genius here stay away.

In terms of what this movie was going for, I think it was a fine movie. Many hilarious moments, some good horror moments as well. I'd say it's right on the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best! Great blend of horror and comedy!, July 19, 2004

This review is from: Club Dread (DVD)
This movie is just hilarious at times but then there's also some scary scenes as well. Its mixed perfectly and Broken Lizard did a fabulous job on the movie. Its about people partying on an island but one by one people start getting killed. Nobody knows who the killer is and he's very devious. I thought that it had a good shocking twist at the end to the killer's identity. Brittany Daniel is a georgeous babe in the movie. The jokes are good throughout. The Coconut Pete songs are fun to listen to and have funny lyrics. Get a bunch of friends gathered around to watch this entertaining flick. It will keep you guessing till the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat enjoyable romp from Broken Lizard troupe, August 2, 2005
Whether or not you liked Broken Lizard's last film, 2002's cult hit Super Troopers, and depending on how low brow you like your comedy, will determine how muh you like Club Dread. The five members play various counselors for washed up rocker Coconut Pete (Bill Paxton, played with wonderful comedic abandon) on his Pleasure Island, where the staff and the vacationers gleefully throw their inhibitions to the wind. However, there is a machete wielding killer on the loose, and for a horror-spoof the violence is surprisingly extreme. Full of blood and copious female nudity, the one thing Club Dread is lacking is in the laugh department. It has it's moments, but the best laughs undoubtadly come from Paxton and the insanely hot Brittany Daniel. All in all, if you dug Super Troopers, Club Dread is worth a look, but all others may want to proceed with caution.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT TOO BAD..., May 21, 2006
It's not near as good as "Super Troopers," but it's not that bad either. I thought it lagged a lot in some parts, but it did have its moments. It's worth watching at least once. Get the unrated version if possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dont expect the same as Super Troopers, April 9, 2005
By
With Super Troopers on DVD, the Broken Lizard comedy troupe built a following. Never to let their fans rest in monotony, they change it up with their third feature film, Club Dread.
As HUGE fans of the horror genre themselves, the Broken Lizard guys make a homage/spoof of horror films, infused with Broken Lizard humor. Their plot doesn't always succeed with being frightening, but where it lacks in scare-tactics, it is filled with carefully planted tributes to their favorite horror films and plot-propelling humor.
For die-hard fans of Super Troopers, let me say that Club Dread is very much the same brand of comedy, complete with many of the extras they have come to adopt for all their films. However, where Super Troopers was more comedy sketches pieced together to form a story, Club Dread is a story with humor running through it. There are no individual comedy blurps (such as the scene of the "meow game" or the "shenanigans" scene) but rather just humors situations and lines spread evenly through the film.
Like any comedy, some jokes soar while other tank, but over all, the humor succeeds at keeping the film entertaining. Watch the movie to enjoy the 5 guys and the fact that they will sink to any level to get a laugh. Watch it with comentary the second time around for a whole new perspective and a whole new set of laughs.
