There are as many versions of a "dream" living space as there are people who dream. This beautifully produced volume tours 23 unusual apartments, in large, crisp photos and with a smattering of text describing how the architects approached the design challenges they faced; some also include floor plans. All exhibit contemporary styling, but in their quest for sleek modernism, a few are so austerely minimalist they feel uninhabited--and uninhabitable--like an ultra-chic showroom or an unfinished, unfurnished design in progress, so devoid of detail that they seem almost featureless: the formal purity of a London dwelling whose only defining characteristic is a spectacular view of the Thames; a stark converted warehouse space in Barcelona; a thoroughly reductionist London apartment that, shockingly, is part of what was once a Victorian mansion. Isn't the phrase "dream apartments" an oxymoron? I don't care how nicely they are done or what their views may be, an apartment is an apartment is an apartment. Thank goodness in our part of the world people can live in real homes where they can walk right outside their own doors into the natural environment.
