5.0 out of 5 stars An unusually well written book, January 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
This book was a real gem to find. Not only is it well written, the characters spring to life and you find yourself dreading the final outcome (to which there are passing references throughout the story). The denouement, when it arrives, is well worth the wait, and totally unexpected. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about the paranormal and the Viet Nam War. I have since re-read the book 4 times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dream Baby, January 7, 2011
This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
Dream Baby is based on fifteen years of research, interviews with two hundred veterans of three American wars who reported paranormal experiences that kept them alive, and actual classified contingency plans to end the war in Vietnam that have still not been made public.

In this acclaimed classic novel of ESP in war--praised by reviewers and readers alike as both a riveting science fiction thriller and one of the finest chronicles of the Vietnam War--young Army Nurse Mary Damico dreams the deaths of soldiers before they happen, but cannot save them. Only when she is recruited for a secret unit of other "esp talents"--one run by a rogue CIA psychiatrist who may be a "talent" himself--can she become the psychic commando she needs to be to stop the psychiatrist's insanity and save those she has come to love.

Bruce, where are you? This book was so cool. A moody, dark journey through Vietnam. Very surrealistic. I have kept hoping this author would show up with another book, but nothing. A must read in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Odd perspective; compelling, December 12, 1998

This is a look at the Vietnam war from an extraordinarily creative and new perspective. Well researched and well written; the author writes as convincingly as if he had been there (as he was not) and the result is a terrific tale. As a VN vet, 1968-69, I have read a lot of books on the country and the war; this is one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb writer, February 27, 2011

This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
Bruce Mcallister is one of my favorite authors. Much of his focus in writing seems to be on short stories (of which I've read many). My two favorite short stories of his are "Kin," Nominated for the Hugo Award, and "The Boy in Zaquitos," which was published in the anthology Best American Short Stories 2007 edited by Stephen King.

Dream Baby, as the rest of the reviewers have awarded, deserves all five stars. The novel was nominated for a Hugo Award, and is yet another example of superb, gripping storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treat!, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
Finally Dream Baby is back in print. I read a library copy years ago and was so happy to see I could purchase my own now so that I could have the pleasure of reading Mary Damico's story again. Bruce McAllister is a master story teller--rich characters set in a world that compels the reader to turn page after page. You know Mary; she is your sister, friend, and cousin, and her reality is brought to life in a way that makes you so frightened for her that, if you could, you'd reach into the pages and try to save her from the psychic gift that is killing her. If you want a book you can't put down, give yourself a treat and buy Dream Baby.

Reading this book was truly a pleasure. The storytelling was extremely captivating allowing me to travel to that suspenseful place and time and feel what Mary was experiencing. It was a very powerful novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful powerful story, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
Great novel! I don't know whether this is a science fiction novel or a war novel really, but I just love how both kinds of stories work together in it. The ESP is so real you look around you when you're finished and know you've got it too, but you have to listen for it or put yourself in a life and death situation to make it appear and save you. I also never thought I'd read a war novel that as a woman let me into war and let me become a warrior. Most war novels are by men and for men and it's hard for a woman to feel invited in. But my brother (who's a firefighter) is reading it and he loves it too. It's the best book I've read in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Masterpiece!, January 9, 2011
This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
Length:: 0:28 Mins

Such a great novel and undeniably original story! Glad to see it's back in print. Re-read it recently and it's as exciting as it was the first time. When is it going to be made into a movie? Mary is such a wonderful heroin and I can already imagine the sound of Bucannon's chilling voice! Can I cast it? : )

Make sure to see this cool trailer for DREAM BABY too that went viral worldwide at youtube. Just found it after a quick google search! Lovin it! All books should have something this exciting to catch your interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable mental trip, May 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dream Baby (Paperback)
Dream Baby is a seminal work of excellent craft and creative genius. I have now seen the Vietnam War in an indelible way that grew inside my head so that I was there through all the blood and guts, but also through the vulnerable honesty of Mary, her dreaded dark visions of who will die and how, and her own dogged persistence along with her team to complete an almost impossible mission.
