All the while Gritta is held captive, Jonah, son Jeremiah, and Indian companion Two Sleep search ceaselessly for her. On the trail, they endure the vagaries of nature, outlaws, and hostile Indians. Like all of Johnston's work, this novel strives for epic stature. Everything is large scale: the villains are pure evil; Jonah and company are borderline candidates for sainthood; and the western setting lends the whole tale a sense of timelessness. Though there are too many peripheral characters and adventures here, the novel's reach never quite exceeds its grasp. Hook's love for Gritta overcomes all obstacles, even structural ones. This was a very interesting book because it had the ability to keep you focused on the objective at hand and still transform you from one setting to another in a very fluid manner. The way everything ties together is masterful. Be sure to read the two previous books before this one so you will be able to enjoy this work as it should be enjoyed.

This book is an exciting tale of a trio of farmers seeking revenge on the wife-stealing, friend-killing, antagonist, Jubilee Usher. The three main characters; Jonah(the dad), Jeremiah(Jonah's son), and Two-sleep(an indian friend of theirs); are trying to get back at Usher for stealing Jonah's wife and Jeremiah's mother, Gretta. As soon as they find him they will kill him. During their journey they come across many adventures inluding almost getting hung; being involved in saloon shootouts; and even suffering minor gunshot wounds. At the end,however, they do finally find usher and crucify him on a cross that he made. They keep their pride and manage to get Gretta back alive and well. I reccomend this book to anyone who likes adventure and wild wild west stories!

I now have all three of Terry C. Johnstons seris, The Plainsman. I enjoyed these three mor than all of the other books he has written, I am an author, and I don't hold a candle to him
