Book Description

Between adjusting to life as a newlywed and trying to survive the first month of medical school, Sara Alderson has a lot on her plate. She definitely doesn’t need to start visiting other people’s dreams again. Unfortunately for her, it’s happening anyway.

Every night, she sees a different person and a different dream. But every dreamer has one thing in common: they all hate Dr. Morris, the least popular professor in the medical school, and they’re all dreaming about seeing him – or making him – dead.

Once again, Sara finds herself in the role of unwilling witness to a murder before it happens. But this time, there are too many suspects to count, and it doesn’t help matters that she hates Dr. Morris every bit as much as any of his would-be murderers do.

Dream Doctor is the second book of the Dream Series.

"The novel is carefully put together, and has a great pacing and flow between heartwarming, heartbreaking, and everything between. The author's academic background and research has clearly paid off in both the personal and social experiences of medical school. The book is an addictive read, and even if you skipped the first book, you'll be wanting to see where life takes Sara through the rest of the series when you hit the end."  - Self-Publishing Review, 5 Stars

The story opens with what should have been a crowning moment for Sara: walking to the podium to receive her degree. “She finds it harder with each step, until her ankle gives way and she tumbles to the floor, her cap falling off her head and rolling right under the stage.” This moment endears her to us, and makes her hesitation amidst all the chores and the confusing calls of life very accessible.

The last thing Sara wants is her gift of penetrating the minds of others. “Sara is surprised, but only for an instant; then it becomes clear to her what’s going on. This has happened before; this is not her dream at all. She don’t cry, or scream; she simply closes her eyes and pleads — already knowing she will not be answered — “Please, God, not again!”

I love the fact that from one book in the series to another, Sara is undergoing a change, both in the development of her professional career and in her personal life. At the beginning of this book, she starts out thinking about her upcoming wedding to Brian. “I’m not even nervous about the wedding itself. It’s pretty much all out of my hands anyway. It wasn’t as though I could do much planning while I was finishing up my last semester…” and by the end, she has just relayed the results of her pregnancy test to Brian. “He kisses me, and holds me even tighter. His cheeks are wet — he’s crying.” These events delineate the phase in her life, and the position of the book in the Dream series.

As in the first book, Dream Student, the narration alternates between two points of view: Sara's voice (in first person) and the description of her dream sequences (in third person, and in italicized font.) These are out-of-body experiences, and we get to witness them not through Sara's voice but through the author's all-seeing eyes. James DiBenedetto presents us with a riddle for us to solve, and allows us to see his lovely Sara from outside, as well as inside her skin.

Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Bit as Good as the First Book August 6, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had purchased Dream Student (Dreams, book 1) (Book 1 in DiBenedetto's Dream Series) at an online book fair and had it on my Kindle for about a month before I actually got around to reading it. I was only about a third of the way through Dream Student before I bought the other three books in the series, anxious to see what happened next in the story of Sara and her amazing talent for finding her way into other people's dreams.

I really loved the first book, largely because I identified with Sara as a college student. She could have been ME, except for her major. I wasn't sure if book 2 would stack up. I was in for a pleasant surprise! I think I liked the second story of the older, more mature Sara even better.

Dream Doctor begins with Sara's marriage to her boyfriend, Brian, just before Sara starts medical school. It isn't long before she finds herself once again, observing other people's dreams, except this time the main character is her least favorite professor, Dr. Morris. Every dreamer seems to have one object: to kill Dr. Morris. Sara has no doubt that one or more of these people has real plans to kill the despised doctor - the question is, can she figure it out in time to save him?

Dream Doctor is very well-written, delving deep into Sara's life as a medical student who is also a newlywed. DiBenedetto does an excellent job of weaving together a thrilling story without leaving out the day-to-day aspects of the main character's life. Also, unlike many series, this book stands alone, and does not necessarily have to be read after book 1, although I highly recommend you download and read all four.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read Dream Student first April 8, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Dream Doctor is the sequel to Dream Student. I always try to read books in sequence if they are set up that way and I definitely think you need to read the first one first to understand some references in this part of the story. The dream series that Sara is experiencing this time are more varied. It is more difficult to figure out "who done it" this time. Sara is experiencing dreams of various people and true to her character, she feels she must help since she has prior knowledge of events. Her husband Brian is a constant character in this book as well, but Sara seems to be less needy and more an equal partner than in the first book. This makes her more interesting. For this reason, I like the way this book is written more than the first. Just the same, I recommend books be read in the sequence.

If you like a slightly weird plot, likeable characters, and a little humor in a lite mystery, you will like this series.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Got to love a sequel March 24, 2013

***Don't read unless you have read the first book***

I had this opportunity to beta read Dream Doctor before publication.
This book is a continuation of Sara and Brian's life, and the dreams are back. This time though, the stakes are so much higher as Sara is facing the very real, very adult world of med-school as well as dealing with the death of someone.

Again, this takes me back to being at uni myself. My room mate was a medical student, and I could smell the formadelhyde, clinging in my nose - thanks James!

There is an interesting twist in the way Sara's dreams lead her to the conclusion, but the pacing and characters were comfortingly familiar.

A great read, and on to the next!
