This is my favorite recording of The Dream of Gerontius. My parents gave me the old Malcolm Sargeant recording when I was a teenager. I have treasured this wonderful piece of music for more than fifty years. It is basically a music drama, but a very short one compared to Wagner's. Too many conductors are reverential. They try to present it as a solemn religious statement and make the work lapse occasionally. Britten does not. This an exciting one. In part one Peter Pears, as usual, is intensely involved in presenting his role, here as a dying man who is fearful and terrified of leaving this life. In the second part Pears develops his character as a human awed and fascinated by his journey to his final judgment. The other two soloists are just as good, which is unusual. The bass who sings the small roles of the Priest and the Angel of the Agony usually is just a nice voice, not a powerful presence; John Shirley-Quirk is too good an artist to settle for that. Yvonne Minton is believable as the protective angel.
The choruses never lag in this performance. They have in the majority of the recordings and live performances I have heard.
If you want the best sound, go for the Hickox on Chandos. If you want a good stereo recording that you will listen to many times, buy this one.
This issue of the recording includes two other works. My own recording does not include this performance of the Delius piece, but it does have Boult's recording of Holst's Hymn of Jesus. It is an incandescent performance. If you like the eerily beautiful moments in Holst's The Planets, you will like this work.

This is a must have for any Elgar or choral music admirers.
This 2-CD set contains a historic recording of Elgar's amazing oratorio "The Dream of Gerontius" conducted by Benjamin Britten, performed by London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with King's College Choir (Cambridge)...The soloists are excellent too: Yvonne Minton, Peter Pears and John-Shirley Quirk, the last two soloists are Britten's most admired vocal solosists too. (Especially Peter Pears, because of the composer's lover!!!)...
Especially, prelude of the work is very impressive, noble. I think that, still, this is (with Enigma Variations) the composer's most famous and beautiful work. I think this oratorio in the same level with Handel's Messiah and Mendelssohn's Elijah...And the performance is marvellous, too. I think, this recording is in the same level with Elgar's own recording (made in 1930'sreleased on EMI).
And there are beautiful two more work: Delius's famous "Sea Drift" cantata, conducted by Richard Hickox, and Holst's "The Hymn of Jesus, conducted by the composre's close friend Sir Adrian Boult, performed by BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. And these two works are very good examples of 20th Centaury Choral Music.
This set has the librettos of all works, too. This is an essential recording and highly recommended.

An excellent performance however after listening to this once again I notice how dated the audio is. This was recorded in the 1960s or 70s and is at the lower end of recording standards of its day. If superior sound is what you crave you might want to seek one of the other performances available, such as the SACD with Colin Davis and the LSO.
